As in Candide, sometimes the flowers in our own gardens escape us. Thus it is with your reporter that the news closest to home has been the longest in reaching print. My neighbor, and classmate, Peter McSpadden has not received the recognition due him. First of the year Peter was elected president of the Greenwich (Conn., of course) Young Republican Club. For several years Pete has been laboring for the cause, and, DaveNeiditz take note up there in Hartford, when the rejuvenation of the GOP ever becomes a reality in the Nutmeg State. I have a feeling Peter will be a strong contribution.
Another near neighbor to me, Roger Malkin, has taken the giant step out into a business of his own. Roger, who used to be vice president for administration of Norma Hoffman Bearings Company in Stamford, Conn., is now president and chief executive officer of W. M. Capital and Management Corporation, a new firm at 60 East 42nd Street, New York. He and his partner, Lawrence Wien, a lawyer, have formed this new firm seeking investment opportunities. Maybe this means there's some chance for all us guys who've had the idea of that axe-handle factory in New Hampshire to get some backing. Anyway, I know we all wish Roger the best of luck, and from what I know of him that's what he'll have.
Switching to the other side of the country we find one of our boys doing very well indeed out in Arizona. Jim Gardner, manager of the Valley National Bank in Tempe, Ariz., has been promoted to assistant vice president and assigned to the bank's statewide credit management division at the home office in Phoenix. Jim's been with the Valley Bank since 1954. He's headed the Tempe office since 1961 and before that he was assistant manager of the Prescott office (in his home town) and manager of the Gila Bend office. In his new position he will be coordinating credit needs and lending activities among Valley National's 96 offices throughout Arizona.
Halfway across, in Chicago, Tim Jameiscn has been named Northern Chicago Regional Sales Manager of Dodge Reports by the F. W. Dodge Company, a division of McGraw-Hill. Tim joined Dodge as a re in Philadelphia in 1956 and has been assistant Regional Sales Manager m Chicago since 1964. He lives in Barrington, Ill., with his wife, Sally, and three little Jameisons.
And right back here in the East, DickDalbeck, a marketing consultant with A. T. DalbecK, Company has recently been elected to membership in the Security and Exchange Commission. And all the time I thought all SEC members were greybeards. I'll tell you, this is some class!
Also in New York, Dick Keger has joined First National City Bank as a vice president irfthe Municipal Bond Department. Before moving to what is affectionately known as in New York, Dick was in the municipal Bond department of Halsey-Stuart & Company.
"'Sorry, but it seems we're overloaded with New York news this month. Although I guess guess we should consider Dick O'Neill's promotion a piece of Baltimore news as well as N.Y.C. news, Dick is with American Can Company and he's just been named commodity manager, Miscellaneous Food Containers, for Rigid Food Packaging, which means he'll be moving into the New York area from Baltimore where he was good container sales representative for that area. Dick joined American Can in 1954. In his new job he will be responsible for the overall marketing, planning, and promotion of miscellaneous rigid food containers throughout the U.S. and Canada. I don't know yet where Dick will live in the N. Y. area, but since he comes from West Orange, N. J., I would imagine that area would hold some attraction for him and his family.
And thank goodness for the other conscientious secretaries! A note from Don Cole '45 informs me that classmate Lieut. Commander Bill Sweet has just been transferred. Bill was exec, officer of the destroyer U.S.S. Compton" (a ship with a worthy name) but he will henceforth, for some time anyway, be assigned to the teaching staff of the Destroyer School in Newport, R. I.
But I still can't seem to get away from New York, this month. Another of our illustrious classmates who lives in that area has recently made more news. Roy Abbott, has been named to the newly created post of senior vice president of Gulf & Western Industries, Inc. Roy had been a vice president of Chase Manhattan Bank and though the release doesn't say what his new duties entail, I'm sure they'll have something to do with making money for his new firm.
