Received notice of Jay Urstadt's election to president of the Realty Foundation of New York. This organization for many years had Harry B. Helmsley as chairman, and the list of officers and directors reads like the "Who's Who" in the real estate business with the likes of Trump, Zucker, and Zeckendorf.
Jay has received many awards for his distinguished service to the city, the industry, and the community—including Man of the Year six times, Award of Honor three times, and the Interfaith Movement Award presented by Mayor Abraham Beame.
I am indebted to a fellow class secretary for passing along information about our adopted classmate Thad Seymour, who addressed us at our 40th Reunion. Thad has announced that he will retire as president of Rollins College next June. Thad has been president since 1978 and during his tenure has tripled the endowment, set higher stan dards for undergraduate admissions, gained accreditation for a graduate school of business, and established an evening program of adult education.
Upon retiring Thad plans to travel, but will continue to teach at the college for the next few years while maintaining a permanent home in Winter Park. From his experience as an amateur magician he stated that now was the time to step off the stage since "the magician in me knows when people are saying 'Where did the rabbit go?' instead of 'I saw where it went.' " This all sounds like he'll have more time to join us at reunions in the future.
Dr. Lester Felton has retired from practice in Worcester, Mass., and headed south to Hilton Head where I hear he has devoted more time to improving his golf game.
John Daukas has really gotten bitten by the sailing bug as he has upgraded to a 36- foot craft and this summer has traveled from Watch Hill, R. I., to Block Island as well as entering a two-day race in August.
Your secretary has received at least one letter to date (at the end of summer) about concerns of a classmate with the College as a start to finding a response or making these thoughts heard as indicated by Vail Haak's comments in the newsletter. It is my hope that as you all return from summer vacations more of you will send comments to me and at the same time tell me about your doings or your roommate's. I can assure it will be truly appreciated.
