Well it was nice while it lasted, but those three summer months sure passed quickly. The nip is back in the air and I'll be looking for you near an opened tailgate this fall.

It is with sadness that I begin this column with the news of the death of Steve Perlin. Details will appear in the' In Memoriam section of this or a later issue.

Art Pettengill, now a captain in Uncle Sam's finest, sent on a very 'interesting correspondence — all in Chinese - I gather Art is in the Orient. I've put the twins on it, but so far no translation.

Stanford University has a new: Dartmouth employee in Stan Sclove. Stan and wife Susan are residing in Palo Alto while Stan toils as a research associate in the Department of Statistics and Sue is teaching in nearby San Jose... Before landing at Stanford Stan captured his Ph.D. at Columbia. Stan reports that Ed Hirsch and wife Gila are located: in Berkeley where Ed is in grad school.

Among the select group recently named by President Johnson to be U. S. Foreign Service Officers were two '62 men - Henry Clarke and Jack Seymour. Both received appointment after highly competitive written and oral examinations, and how much of an accomplishment this is is indicated by the fact that only 200 are accepted each year from 8,000 to 10,000 applicants. Clarke has an M.A. from Harvard and Seymour an M.A. from Boston University. They will get assignments with an embassy or consulate in one of the 119 countries with which this country maintains diplomatic relations, or with the State Department in Washington.

Jerry and Terry Joiner brought us up-to-date from New Orleans where Jerry finished up med school at Tulane. The new M.D. is presently in San Antonio, Texas studying Aerospace Medicine. Jerry is one of three physicians selected to doctor the astronauts at Cape Kennedy. Just like Jerry to land beach duty.

The Joiners sent on news of other 62's. Jon Fairbanks was wed to Inger Bentzon on May 6 in Oslo, Norway. Jon and Inger are presently in Montreal where Jon is interning. John Holland is sailing with the Navy at submarine school in New London, Conn., while Joe Sackett is now in Viet Nam serving with the Army.

Dr. Barry Levine and wife Ellen are back in Boston where Barry starts his senior residency in medicine at the Harvard Service Boston City Hospital. Prior to this assignment Barry was a resident at Presbyterian St. Luke's Hospital in Chicago. While at St. Luke's Barry was honored with the Flick Family Award for the outstanding medical resident.

A future Big Green tennis star is in the early stages of development down in Bridgeport, Conn. Jim and Ann Biggs welcomed husky Charles Taintor Gardner Biggs to the family last April 21. Young Charles joins sister Betsy, now a year and a half, for a tough doubles team. Jim adds that he spent some fine hours this summer in a tennis tournament with "that old large partner of the past, Gordy Aydelott."

Another future Dartmouth athlete is Michael Thomas Evan Laris, new son of Tomand Marcia Laris, who arrived May 24. Tom, who has been busy lately running around the country making the rest of us look bad, notes that young Mike has "a good pair of legs."

Preston Rowe dropped along a nice letter from Winchester, Mass., just before leaving to undertake the role of an instructor in the psychology department at Haverford College in Pennsylvania. Preston and the Mrs., plus their four children, will be settling down in suburban Philadelphia from where he plans to drive over to Princeton in November. Preston has spent the last few years at MIT collecting his Ph.D. in psychology while taking his leisure hours at nearby Wells Beach in Maine.

Preston passed on word of Everett McCassey who is presently located in Viet Nam. Eve and Ann recently added child number 2 and son number 1 to their family.

While at MIT Preston came across TedCantril and Tony Knapp who is teaching in the MIT Math Department. Also seen around Cambridge is Pete Brink who is still at Harvard.

Thanks for all the letters this summer and keep them coming. See you at Brigg's Cage and other such places.
