Some years ago, the merchants of Phoenix met to decide on suitable outdoor Christmas decorations for the shopping district. Someone suggested the Star of Bethlehem, but he was promptly squelched by a storekeeper who snapped: "Let's keep religion out of it!"
Our Dartmouth Christmas Party offered the traditional holiday cheer to an overflow crowd at Mountain Shadows Country Club under the rufescent chairmanship of vicepresident Dr. Dick Loughry '34 and his stunning family. A little "religion" was added for the benefit of a dozen freshman candidates and their folks. Led by our current undergraduates, we sang Dartmouth's praises with missionary fervor, and departed aglow with satisfaction for our choice of college. We trust that our guests were similarly impressed.
Yesterday's monthly luncheon at the Arizona Manor (always the first Tuesday, and always a good square two-buck roast-beef meal) was attended by most of our regulars and a couple of winter visitors. Prexy BillBehrens '56, an attorney, admitted to having signed up for that endlessly continued hearing we call matrimony. Treasurer RussFisher '17 confided to Bill Brindley '45 that our coffers contain one cent and not many . dollars. Tower Snow '31 explained the fine points of an all-court man-for-man basketball stall. Jim Norton '43 was so engrossed in Dick Vaules' ('57) highlights on recent interviews with Dartmouth applicants that he splashed a little blood gravy on Tim Paige'66 which was wiped in by Frank Poor '26.Nick Carter '27 and Dr. Lowell Wormley'27 took the position that nothing really important could have happened in Hanover prior to September 1923 nor subsequent to June 1927. Jim Felter '46 couldn't get a class in edgewise. Dick Morgan '63 and "Dutch"Waterbury '12 commented in the expected manner to the announcement of an Ivy League "fry" in April. Steaks will be fried during the affair — and the attendees shortly thereafter.
Not an unkind word was said about the blizzards raging in the other 49 states. And that's how it is in sun-drenched Phoenix. Come on out!
