The 1967 Alumni Fund Drive opened for Boston with a March 30 dinner for the local agents at the Parker House. Present were Bob Dickey, Johnny Benson, CharlieDwyer, Bunce Clarkson, Jim Frame, KenSampson, Jim Godfrey (direct from the Caribbean) and yours truly. One of the things which impresses this scribe is the fact that the College regards our Class as fifth among all classes in potential giving power, exceeded only by '25, '29, '27, and '26. You've got your letter from John Benson reminding you that our goal is $54,310. Jim Swift is in gear once more. Avoid the rush and give early, men.
Parker Soule advises that Red Rolfe is at home recuperating from his recent surgery, and is doing well. Bill Steck sojourned to Florida for a while with Betty while she recovered from a surgical bout.
Jim Rice confessed to Ernie Moore that he was so exhausted from the convention of school superintendents which he attended in Atlantic City that he had to retreat to Nassau and Mexico City for respite. What I do not understand from the brief postcard is how Jim got invited to the convention in the first place by his school superintendent? Sounds confusing.
The William L. Benger Memorial Awards, established a year ago by the Abington (Pa.) Players in honor of one of the organization's outstanding charter members, were presented recently for the first time at the annual meeting of that group.
Shep Wolff has been hearing from JackWeisert who states he is returning to the States from Germany in late May and plans to be in Hanover for about four weeks before proceeding back to Hamburg via New York. Shep is trying to arrange a Boston get-together.
Rex Fall writes, "am alive, kicking sometimes, grandfather of one boy and one girl, and glad to be where I am."
Malcolm Pratt, teaching mathematics at Marshfield (Mass.) High School, is waxing proud about his wife Genevieve, who was the recent subject of a "teacher profile" in the local gazette. She teaches home economics in Pembroke to 39 gals. However, the article also gives Malcolm a little play - he's received four National Science Foundation grants to prepare courses in the new math. "Who runs things at home?" Genevieve was asked. "Well," she replied, "let us just say he handles the checkbook."
Dr. Maurice Whittlngill, professor of zoology at the University of North Carolina has had special allotments for his research projects from alumni giving there.
Peanuts Winslow recently brainwashed members of the Waterville (Me.) Rotary Club with stories of his maritime exploits.
Dune Tingle was elected a vice president of Armstrong Cork, Lancaster, Pa.
Bunce Clarkson threatens to investigate the damn cheese situation in Petersham, Mass., by visiting Ed Hutchinson on a personal inspection of his general store. I look for a report from Bunce.
Ed Gruen and Dick Holbrook are hammering at each other, with copies sent to me, trying to figure a good angle for a proposed new Class Book. They both want to hear my ideas and probably will, but for the present I will say simply - if we do have such a book let's not take each other too seriously.
MEANWHILE, BACK IN 1928 the following quaint and occasionally unbelievable incidents were recorded: 1. (advts.) "Down the alley, on the way to the Nugget, is Scotty's - headquarters for eats - anything from a dinner to a toast side. At the Nugget today, a Universal-Jewell Production, a gripping dramatic story of pride of family pitted against impetuous youth, with Jean Hersholt, George Lewis, and Marion Nixon. Short subject: 'Motorboat Mamas.' Matinees 2:10 and 3:40 P.M. Student show 6:45. Townspeople 8:30 P.M." 2. (Headline) "Hawley favors Brown to Down Indians!" He was right. '31ers in that game: Crehan,Andres, Lee, Sutton, Clark, Bromberg, Magee, Johnson, Wolff and Nims. I know if there are any errors or omissions in the above list I will be so advised. 3. I will send a cigar to any '31er who can identify Fred Metzdorf. 4. Why was that room called "Z Webster?" Was there a "Y Webster?" 5. Bob Oelman listed as night editor of the Daily D. Wonder whatever happened to him?
