Guess who won the 1967 "National Book Award" for the most distinguished translation of a contemporary work? None other than Gregory Rabassa. He won the award for his translation from the Spanish of "Hopscotch." In part, the citation from the judges said, "The prose of Cortazar requires of its translator exceptional rhetorical bravura, a playful facility in parody and invention, and an imaginative precision for bringing into vivid English the modern Spanish-American novel of ideas."
Barrister Jim Donnelly has been making the news recently. In March, Jim was appointed by the Millbury selectmen as Town Counsel for a one year term (incidentally Jim's also legal counsel to the Worcester County Commissioners). Then a few weeks after that, the Assumption Preparatory School announced the formation of an advisory board, or Board of Regents, and named Jim as its Chairman.
In much the same line, Governor Nelson Rockefeller appointed Dick Smith as a trustee of Ulster County Community College. A successful Saugerties hardware dealer, Dick has been involved in educational affairs in his town and county for many years. He served two terms on this Saugerties school board and was its building and grounds committee chairman. Dick is also a director of the Saugerties National Bank and Trust Company.
When he isn't chasing Adam Clayton Powell or his secretary, or his wife, ClarkMacGregor gets down to his assignments in Congress where he serves on the sub-committee of Bankruptcy and Re-organization, the vital sub-committee on anti-trust, as well as continuing his service on a special subcommittee on State Taxation of interstate commerce.
Jack Lawrence has been named Technical Director of Building Materials for Koppers Tar & Chemical Division. As you perhaps know. Jack sold out his business to Koppers and as a result, has moved to Pittsburgh with them. He'll be responsible for technical services and development activities related to building material products which include built-up roofing, fabrics, water-proofing. damp-proofing, and building and maintenance materials.
Herb Storfer, after a long and successful career in the perfume industry where he has served as president of Parfumes Corday Inc. and then president of Roger & Gallet Ltd., Was recently appointed as president of the new cosmetic division of Standard Metals Inc. Possibly you saw his picture in the Times.
Jim Rudnick is now making his home in Portland, Ore.
As of mid-May, the Class of '44 is stand ing No. 5 in a group of 7 in the Green Derby standings for the Alumni Fund. We're about $1000 behind our position at this time last year. As Phil Penberthy has advised you, our dollar objective has been raised so the next few weeks is going to be very important. Phil and the men working for him are again doing an outstanding job.
