Somehow it almost escaped me that the reopening of school and college meant the end of vacation for class secretaries, yet now as early September sends the ALUMNI MAGAZINE to press comes need to review so much that has happened over the long summer recess.

Sadly must be recorded the deaths of four beloved classmates: In May the loss of Walter Kenneth Le Count in Bronxville, N. Y., on May 18 and two days later on May 20 the sudden passing by heart attack of FranzRaphael Marceau in St. Petersburg, Fla. In July came the deaths of Harvey H. Smith in Bay Village, Ohio on July 6 and of ErnestRoy Kittridge in Dedham, Mass., on July 10. The distinguished life records of these men may be read in our 1914 Golden Year Book.

During the summer our president LayLittle, aware that our treasurer Howard S.Curtis was having a rough time in and out of hospitals with heart difficulties, took steps to relieve him of the burden of minding our financial affairs by persuading Edgar H. Elkins of 105 Carnarvon Circle, Springfield, Mass., to take over for Howard. So we pinch-hit for each other when called upon.

You learned from our Class Notes of last June that a gift of great importance to the Dartmouth Medical School had been made by Mart and Kathleen Remsen but not until President Dickey released this news at a commencement luncheon was it known that their $1.75-million gift was the largest ever made by a living Dartmouth College alumnus.

It is good to report that Fred Davidson who in June had his own battle with unexpected disabilities especially in eye sight came through the summer vastly improved and grateful for the fine support of his team of assistant class agents who kept high 1914's record in the Alumni Fund's final showing.

The courage and determination of LewisCorliss who not only relearned how to speak after a throat cancer operation but who went on to teach special education classes in Granby High School (Conn.) were officially recognized in an award in June to the Granby Board of Education. Lew retired in June just before his 78th birthday planning, however, to continue private tutoring and substitute teaching in the grades of elementary schools.

Tohn A. Warren of Wrentham represented Dartmouth at the May installation of Mr. Devo as the new president of Dean Junior College. For the occasion he dug out his cap and gown writing that it was the only time in his life that he rated a hood.

Republican and Democratic conventions have dominated all news channels these past weeks but behind the scenes we are sure that Voghie Stiles as chairman of our 55th reunion is preparing for our convention in Hanover this coming June.

Space does not permit listing the birthdays of those of us born during the summer months, but to all who were we send warmest greetings.
