MARCH 1968 CARLTON J. WARD

Greetings to all from the Golden Gate. In the process of publishing a new local directory we have reviewed a few old records and find that in 1950 we had 381 alumni in our area, while today's local directory contains 1141 names, a rather impressive increase. Could we be the largest club outside of Boston, New York, and Chicago? As you newcomers arrive here do join us at a Wednesday luncheon at the Iron Horse.

Ed Drechsel '36, our Alumni Councilor, attended the joint Alumni Council-Trustees' meeting in mid-January in Hanover. Ed gave a very complete and meaningful report to about forty of us at our January 31 luncheon. We learned where Dartmouth is heading, how it expects to reach the goals set up, and what we, as alumni, can do to help. Ed said he always felt he could "bleed green" (borrowed from John Meek '33) after a trip to Hanover and he passed that feeling on to us. This report to the alumni by our councilor was so well received and informative that we hope it will be repeated after every Council meeting.

If all goes well we'll have Dan Marks '29 of the Economics Department as a luncheon speaker in February. Dan is spending a month or two in our area, really his home town, as he was born in San Francisco. If he can be with us we should learn a bit about what life was like prior to the tremendous growth which occurred here during and after WW 11.

Jack Clow '52, our national enrollment committeeman, has a really enthusiastic group working for him, covering some 75 high schools. Right at the moment they are snowed under by form 6's from Hanover, but they already have their sights lowered on good prospects for the entering class of 1972.

Our annual meeting will be held March 18 at the Mark Hopkins Hotel in San Francisco with Dean Thaddeus Seymour as our guest. From the reputation that precedes him we are looking forward to an outstanding evening. Should anyone reading this happen to be in San Francisco that evening, call our listed telephone number and make reservations for the dinner. We expect at least 150, including wives, and you would be sure to meet a classmate. Our president, Bob King'57, is the chairman.

Plans for the spring and summer are incomplete now, but will be an early project for the new officers. One event we hope to stage is a joint Dartmouth-Princeton picnic.
