Since the first edition of this work was published in 1921 it has been generally conceded to be a classic in its field and the present fifth edition maintains this high standard. A complete rewriting of the fourth edition was necessitated by the rapid developments in the last twenty years in dermatology and radiology including the fuller understanding of radiation hazards. The original author, Dr. George M. MacKee, was very well aware of the dangers of radiation when improperly used and wisely insisted in his first edition on the importance of a thorough knowledge on the part of the dermatologist of the fundamentals of radiation physics, radiation biology, and radiation protection.
The present authors retain this concept and they present an authoritative discussion of basic radiation physics, radiation biology, and radiation pathology which is sufficiently detailed and comprehensive for the needs of the dermatologist employing any form of ionizing radiation. Currently-used radioisotopes and the electron beam are included in the discussion.
Types of x-ray apparatus and radium and isotope applicators are described and careful calibration of each radiation source is explained. Practical techniques and appropriate dosages are given for each form of radiation.
The clinical section takes up each dermatologic condition in which radiation ther- apy is useful, with a brief but entirely adequate discussion of the clinical aspects of the disease and the place of radiation in treatment. Techniques and dosages suitable to the particular condition are described and necessary protective procedures detailed. Systemic and supportive treatment and local adjunctive medication are included in the discussion of therapy.
Throughout the text the authors evince a wholesome respect for the potency of radiation but at the same time they decry any unreasoning fear of using it when a specific indication exists and when the user is adequately trained.
This book is indeed an invaluable tool for anyone using ionizing radiation in the treatment of dermatologic conditions.
