Leslie A. Lummis Jr. '34 stretches the seven-day work week for Americans in Saigon to include hours precious to 48 polio victims at Queen of Peace Orphanage. Like children everywhere, the small Vietnamese couldn't care less that their benefactor's title is Chief, Architect and Engineering Section, Vietnam Regional Exchange; what does delight them are the piggy-back rides and tricks, personal attentions that are hard to come by in an overcrowded orphanage. Even the candy and cookies Lummis brings along are not as impressive as the fact that he can make his thumb fall off. The extra hours he can't find for the children are provided by two Vietnamese women whose salaries he pays personally.

Before going to Vietnam, Lummis had been president of several large manufacturing concerns. He always has been involved in Boy Scout work and in orphanages wherever he lived.
