THE 1986 ALUMNI FUND
OCTOBER • 1986

FROM THE CHAIRMAN

Despite all the contention, 1986 was a good year for the Alumni Fund, since 24,095 Dartmouth alumni contributed $11,021,046. That's a participation rate of 64.5 per cent, the highest in the Ivy League and one of the highest in the country. Dartmouth's alumni brought to life the words of President Emeritus John Sloan Dickey "In the Dartmouth fellowship there is no parting."

Highlights included: • A 50th reunion record of $1,056,000 set by the Class of 1936; • The tenth million-dollar class the 25th reunion Class of 1961, which gave $1,001,961 with a record 87 per cent participation; • Corporate matching gifts increased to $1.7 million; • New year-out records for 21. classes; • Contributions of over $100,000 each by 24 non-reunion classes; • Parents Fund giving increased to $552,000; • The top non-reunion class in the country the Class of 1953, which gave $253,000 with 83 per cent participation.

It cost the Alumni Fund only seven cents to raise a dollar this year, thanks to devoted head agents, reunion giving chairmen, telethon and participation coordinators, and class agents. They deserve special thanks and recognition, not only for the work they did for the Fund, but also for the extra time they spent answering classmates' difficult questions.

Equally important is a special thank-you to every one of you who expressed your devotion to and concern for Dartmouth by contributing to the 1986 Alumni Fund. Difficult and challenging though the year may have been, the Alumni Fund came through with flying colors. I am very proud, and I consider it a privilege to have served as its chairman.

For Dartmouth, Joel B. Portugal '58
