News is scarce from members of the class. What I get is sent to me by "Joe" Barnett and a few others but I'll keep trying. Last call for signing up for reunion. If you haven't done so, please get in touch with Bill Towler at once. Latest reports indicate an attendance of well over 100, including of course members of families. Dolly Scarry is coming to the reunion and is looking forward to a great visit and a good time.
I noted in the sporting page of a Sunday newspaper that Dave Morey was in attendance at the Red Sox-Braves game last week.
An item of interest about Nathanial Merrill, Tubby Merrill's son. The article appeared in the March 16 issue of the "Christian Science Monitor." There was a photo of Nate and the resemblance to Tubby was striking. The smile is also reminiscent of Tubby's. Nate is the alert, youthful and imaginative resident stage director of the Metropolitan Opera. Said Nate: "Research and study, not inspiration, motivate my direction of opera performance." Caught right after a stage rehearsal of the new production of Verdi's "Luisa Miller," Merrill relaxed from a strenuous seven-hour stretch to talk about stage direction of opera in general, and "Luisa Miller" in particular, before going to coach a replacement in the "Aida" cast for the following night. "Luisa Miller" marks Merrill's second successful production at the Met this season. He had earlier won praise for his enchanting concept of Humperdinck's "Hansel and Gretel," an historic achievement in Met annals. Merrill has served at the Met as stage director since 1957, the only native American to hold such a position. The class may well be proud of Tubby's son.
Bob Conant reports a visit from HarryFrench and friends a couple of weeks ago. "General" Wilson has written Bill Towler that his wife Edna had a very serious fall breaking three vertebrae. She has had a very hard time of it, so he finds it quite impossible to get to reunion.
Just returned from funeral services for Mrs. Grace (Macdonald) Macleod, sister of our classmate Jack Macdonald. Jessie Scott, widow of Leon Scott and a sister of Grace, was present. This is a fine loyal Dartmouth family, which, sad to relate, is getting smaller each year.
Joe Cheney says that their plans for reunion are more or less up in the air, owing to the fact that they are selling their home and moving to an apartment. It all depends on if and when they sell it and what they can get for it. Sorry to report that TomSullivan's wife is confined to a nursing home and won't be able to make Hanover. She sends to all her best wishes and hopes the reunion will be highly successful.
Zanny Robeson says that he will be unable to make the reunion. He is looking forward to spring in Washington. The warm sunshine he hopes will clear up a respiratory condition that has been bothering him this past winter.
On St. Patrick's eve, March 16 there was a Dartmouth gathering at the Lido-Biltmore club on Lido Beach, Sarasota, Fla. Present from 1913 were Lois and Bill Towler, Marie and Joe Barnett, Virginia and Harvey McClary, Lorette and Cy Jones and Kathleen Pishon. Helen and George Boggs '14, Scott Rogers and Gene Gardner of 1911 rounded out the group. The Towlers were guests at the Lido-Biltmore for two weeks. The McClarys and Boggses were staying on Siesta Key, Sarasota. The Boggses drove down the 2500 miles from their home in Nova Scotia as they have done for some years. Joe says that George is as trim and fit as he was in college. George attributes it to hard physical work all his life. Kathleen Pishon teaches math in a tutoring school in Sarasota. Cy Jones spent only one year at Hanover and went on to become a dental surgeon practicing in the New York area. The Scott Rogerses of Cleveland rent an apartment on Longboat Key every winter. This pleasant occasion was planned by none other than that master planner and host Bill Towler.
April 27 marks the Towlers' 50th wedding anniversary. They plan to go to White Sulphur Springs for two weeks at that time. Gene Towler '17 was best man at their wedding. Joe Barnett was an usher.
