The summer has flown by and it is time to write a few lines for the October issue. I hope that those of you who garden had better luck than I had. A wet June with too much rain and a dry July and August produced a very disappointing crop of flowers and vegetables. In spite of this we managed to get a winter's supply of jam from our raspberry patch.
The Dartmouth football team will have played its first game with New Hampshire by the time this letter appears. Word from Hanover indicates the team faces a rough rebuilding job, especially in the offensive and defensive lines. A goodly number of sophomores must develop if it is to be a strong Ivy League contender. Let's hope that quite a few of the class will be in Hanover Oct. 12, to see the game with Princeton, always a thriller.
All classmates, wives, and friends from reports received had a wonderful time at our 55th reunion in June. Many expressed regrets at not being able to attend. Carl Shumway was one who greatly missed the occasion. He writes from his new home in Marblehead, Mass. "Here I have been for a month as I sold my home in Lynnfield, Mass., so will you please change my address and thank our 1913 classmates for the fine card sent by so many at reunion time. I was so sorry to miss it, but lucky I did as the children came to help me clean out the house the same weekend. How I miss it after 37 years there! Have spoken on the phone with 'Tim' Nichols' wife, Grace, who lives nearby, as also my younger married daughter, Mrs. Lorna S. Hamilton, 37 High Street. Health is poor, also eyesight, so sold my car last fall. Also I am ashamed to say all my skis, but now in my 80th year, I skied until 2-3 years ago." Carl would be very pleased to hear from any of his classmates or better yet a visit. His address: Apt. 2, 1 Green St., Marblehead, Mass. 01945.
Bart and Renza Shepard have been enjoying a three-week vacation through the Canadian Rockies and Alaska. They flew to Chicago, joined a group of fellow travellers, and boarded the Canadian Pacific train for Vancouver, B. C. En route they made stops and visits to Jasper National Park, Banff, and Lake Louise. After sightseeing at Vancouver and Victoria, they boarded the Canadian Pacific "SS Princess Patricia" for visits to ports along the inside sea passage to Alaska, stopping at Prince Rupert, Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway, and the Yukon Territory. They then headed for home via Seattle after a wonderful trip.
Henry Hamilton writes that after a delightful reunion in Hanover in June, they arrived home after a trip to Montreal, Quebec, Lake Placid, and Elmira, N. Y. Henry says "My family and I wish to thank the reunion committee for the wonderful reunion. We enjoyed every minute of it. All our classmates were so friendly." Florence and "Ed"Sides missed the reunion. They wrote Johnnie Remsen that "it would have been much too much for us."
Robert Carson McCoy, our classmate, died July 27, 1968, in the Sunset Villa Nursing Home in Ashland, Ohio. Our sympathy goes to his family and his one .daughter, Mrs. Mary Meisling of Buffalo N. Y. See "In Memoriam" notice in this or a later issue.
In a letter to Mr. and Mrs. John Remsen, Jessie Kilbourn, Albert Kilbourn's widow, writes that she couldn't make the reunion. She adds: "It has been a great pleasure to meet the members of Albert's class. He was most careful to arrange that I visit Dartmouth on our honeymoon. He loved Dartmouth best of all the schools he attended and graduated from." Ray Ball wrote Johnnie Remsen that he and his wife Lydia, who is in the White Plains hospital, were very touched to receive the beautiful card with, its message and all the class signatures. We all hope that Lydia will make a quick recovery.
Jeannette Adams, Dave Adams' widow, to J. Rernsen: "I was delighted to have your thoughtful invitation to the 55th reunion. I'd really love to be there! It does not seem possible now, so I'll send warmest greetings and deepest appreciation of the class Kindness to me on the 50th occasion. Would you extend my greetings and ask any class member coming this way in their travels to stop and see me. I work at the college reception desk, so if I don't answer the telephone, call there." Her address: 22 Jewett Lane, South Hadley, Mass.
Parker Trowbridge says he seems to be reclining quite a bit, but can still smoke his pipe. If any of you have some good snapshots taken at reunion, would you please send them on to "Joe" Barnett, preferably black and white. For old times' sake would like to hear from the following: "Sid" Ackerstrom, "Milt" Aronowitz, "Les" Ashton,"Dud" Bernstein, "Bill" Bronk, and any other classmate who has a bit of news. .
