To review Dartmouth's commitment to the objective of equal opportunity in all aspects of the life of the College and to propose new initiatives, the Dartmouth Trustees last month authorized the naming of an ad hoc committee and asked that the study be given priority attention.

The Board's action was in response to a recommendation by President Dickey, who spoke of the widespread conviction at Dartmouth and throughout the country that more can be done in all areas of American life, and particularly in education, to make the ideal of equal opportunity a reality for all. In its discussion and action the Board strongly endorsed this view.

John R. McLane Jr. '38, a Manchester, N. H., attorney, is serving as chairman of the committee, which held its first meeting in Hanover over the weekend of April 26-27. He expressed the hope that the committee will soon hold an open meeting to hear the views of the College community.

Serving with Mr. McLane on the committee are William L. Baldwin, Professor of Economics; Robert E. Bennett '69 of Chicago; Peter A. Bien, Associate Professor of English; Mrs. James W. Campion III of Hanover; Robert W. Christy, Professor of Physics; Charles F. Dey '52, Dean of the Tucker Foundation (vice chairman of the committee); J. Stewart Fraser Jr. of the Dartmouth College mechanical and labor force; William McCurine Jr. '69 of Chicago; Ralph N. Manuel '5B, Assistant Director of Admissions; Pierre D. Payne '70 of Ivyland, Pa.; and Richard Everett III '63T, Assistant to the Business Manager, who is executive secretary of the committee.

Mr. McLane, who heads the study, has a long record of public service in New Hampshire and has taken a special interest in the problem of equal opportunity. He resigned last year as chairman of the Advisory Commission of the state's Department of Health and Welfare after many years on the commission. A 1941 graduate of Harvard Law School, he has been an alderman of the city of Manchester, a member of the city's housing authority, and a trustee of the New Hampshire State Hospital. He is the son of John R. McLane '07, a Trustee of the College for thirty years, and the brother of Charles B. McLane '41, Professor of Government at Dartmouth.
