Louis Wolf Goodman '64 is co-editor with his colleague Robert F. Winch, both of Northwestern University, of the third edition of Selected Studies in Marriage and theFamily containing 62 articles, each with an introduction. Goodman and Winch compared the selections of the second edition with hundreds of articles published and unpublished since 1962 and replaced two-thirds of the second edition. The new volume has two fundamental approaches: structural functional and developmental. Updated, the opening chapter on methodology offers criteria for judging contributions. Chapers 2-5 consider the structure and functions of the immediate family in the context of the larger kin group. Chapters 6-13 analyze the relations of parents and children, and chapters 14-19 the relations of man and woman from dating and mate selection through marriage and marital dissolution. Published by Holt, Rinehart and Winston, the 448- page book will be available in September in both hard cover and paperback.
