On November 2, Harry Sampson celebrated his 91st birthday. He reports that his general health is good but that he is obliged to spend his time in bed which undoubtedly brings a serious sense of limitation However, his legal training and experience must give him quietness, composure and steadiness in this difficult trial. We of 1900 send him greetings and a long cheer of encouragement.

Elizabeth Gaffney, daughter of Georgelong, writes me that she and her husband Bill have been called back to Idaho because of the serious illness of Bill's mother. This unfortunate circumstance probably will mean a prolonged absence from their California home. Bill's father is now confined to a nursing home in Lewiston, Idaho. We of 1900 send much sympathy and the hope that better fortunes may attend them in the days ahead.

In a recent letter, Ruth, wife of ArthurRoberts, tells me that Arthur has had to limit his activities very considerably. As a result, they were unable to go to their home in North Conway for the summer season. He gets out very little and requires some professional care. Keeping hold of their home in Natick is becoming a very real problem. Possibly, in the near future, some other arrangements will have to be made. There comes a time when people of our generation need the protection and loving help which others must provide.

I would like to add a personal word to what has been reported so completely and lovingly on the death of Alice Proctor. When I became secretary of the Class in 1957 my wife and I often called on the Proctors and after Charles' passing we continued to call on Alice occasionally. She was always a gracious hostess and had a rare sense of humor, especially with regard to incidents which concerned herself. She possessed a choice personality, was an excellent neighbor, a kind friend, and devoted to the class of 1900 and to the College. The Hanover community will be the poorer for her passing.
