Bill Pierce wrote recently. It is great to hear from him and to learn of his excitement about Bill and Liz's son Will. It seems that Will applied to and was accepted by Dartmouth College, class of 2003. It gives me chills to write a year that begins with the number "2." Bill notes that it was a very pleasant surprise since his son had not shown very much interest about Dartmouth in the past. This story resonates with us, since our daughter Amy had shown little interest in Dartmouth but agreed as a favor to her grandfather, Paul Hannah '27, to take a day trip with him and me to Hanover one October weekend in 1988. She saw the '92s mass in the west stands after the football game (which Dartmouth won), run down across the field, run up the east stands and then back again. Amy said, "They look like they are having so much fan." On the drive home Amy allowed as how she might check things out farther at her high school and before we knew it, she was in the class of 1993! My guess is that the Pierces will be as happy as the Hannahs at the outcome. I wonder from time to time if Amy would have wanted to go to Dartmouth if the gendarmes of the College, augmented by their colleagues from the town of Hanover, were as protective about the football field then as they are now. The grass does get some heavy use during the game, right? Maybe there is a legal angle. I shall have to ask College counsel Cary Clark about that one sometime. Anyway, Bill goes on to explain that they have a place at Lake Morey in Fairlee, Vt., and they get up there a lot. It seems that there are lots of college friends up that way. Bill and Liz will be joining our gang in London this July. Thanks for the fine letter, Bill.
I love the headline in the Connecticut Post (Bridgeport) of October 23, 1998: "People's President (James P. Biggs) redefines goals, retires." Now that's my idea of a good redefinition! There is a fine article in the Banker & Tradesman (Boston, Mass.) in September about Stu Johnson: "In the nearly three decades that Stuart Johnson has been involved in the real estate industry, he's led many struggles and helped drive substantial change. Through it all, one thing has remained constant: Johnson's staunch commitment to protecting the rights of property owners." Stu was awarded the Rental Housing Association seventh annual Industry Excellence Award.
