'22 delights in acclaiming classmates and class sons who are working so earnestly to push the Dartmouth Third Century Fund over the top. In a cause where concern and involvement supersede words, the Class takes pride in saluting Gray Bates, Regan Brown, Harry Bruckner, Bill Bullen, Tommy Byrne, Dave Camp, Herm Carlisle, Haskell Cohn, Warren Daniell, Carroll Dwight, King Fauver and son Scribner '62, Charles Henderson '62, Frank Horan, Gene Hotchkiss and James '50, Carter Hoyt and Carter Jr. '49, John Kemeny, Killie Kilmarx and Robert '50, Andy Marshall, Jim Maze, Ike Miller, Stan Miner, Len Morrissey, Wally Mountcastle, Wesley Nutten Ill '51, Scott Rambach '54, Robert Sands '59, Spenny Smith, Edward Spiegel '53, Paul Spiers '47, Don Tobin, Fred Vogel, Peter Vos Burgh '52, Thomas Waterman '59. And now as the campaign clock approaches its mid-December marking, thanks again from '22 to all who show you care.
Seventy-four of the '22 family - and that's an incomplete roster, were in Hanover for the Penn game. The convergence, the game, bonny weather and flaming foliage made the weekend joyful. Fifty-four Twoters attended the pre-game luncheon in the Drake Room and twenty-seven were at the Occom Inn post-game dinner. Once more, the Class is indebted to Ike Miler for the weekend's pleasant arrangements. After the Saturday dinner, Ike was moderator for a wide open discussion with a panel consisting of Roy and Dot Ball (Flint, Mich.), Ted andBab Davidson (Evanston, Ill.), and Geneand Nettie Hotchkiss (Highland Park, Ill.). These "westerners" had been in Hanover surveying the local scene for some days previously and they capably answered questions covering a broad range of college and class interests. The 41-0 score, of course, begets a temptation to begin boasting. "We're Number One," but it's early yet. Princeton, remember did that in 1965. Inflation pre- cludes the listing of 74 names here, so that privilege falls to the worthy and diligent Steve Kenyon who will list the names in his laudable Twoter newsletter.
John S. Johnson recently retired from an interesting 38-year career with the United States Rubber Co. He joined the company in 1931 and advanced initially in its tire production division. During the war he was chief of the tire section on the War Production Board in Washington. Since 1951 he has dealt with overall corporate activities as assistant to the company's president and since 1961 he has fulfilled similar responsibilities working with the chairman of the board. Every classmate joins in wishing Johnny and his family health and happiness for many years ahead.
Bob Bartlett, we hear, has recovered splendidly from heart surgery at Mass. General Hospital, Boston. Jim Carroll also has had operations over the past two years, but he has shown great courage and is writing a book on real estate. President emeritus of the Senior Citizens of Cape Cod, Charlie himself got away last spring for a vacation in the West Indies proving that no matter where they go, Cape Codders like to be nigh onto salt water.
It's a relief to report Warren and MaryDaniell, as of late October, are in Eugene, Ore. They went especially eager to see their newest grandchildren, boy and girl twins belonging to daughter Elizabeth and her husband Charles Yegian. The twins bring the Daniell grandchildren to a total of 20. The absence of Dan and Mary from Hanover is by no means a cause for relief, but their destination certainly is because Dan generally chooses to go places he knows the class scribe cannot spell. For instance, as a consultant in the planning and production of paper manufacturing, Dan left Hanover some time back for some place such as Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and prior to that he went on a similar mission somewhere in South America that was both unspellable and unpronounceable. That makes Eugene sound much less hazardous, but depend upon Dan to go skiing in Oregon if there is any snow on the slopes.
And here in Hanover, Jere R. Daniell '55, Harvard M.A. '60 and Ph.D. '64, has advanced from assistant to associate professor of history. Jere's field covers Colonial America, The Age of the American Revolution, History of the United States 1763-1877, and Black History. He is also the author of "Eleazar Wheelock and the Dartmouth College Charter" which appears in this issue of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE.
In a July report from Bangkok, DonDonavanik was found to be in fine health. A more recent relay regrettably says Don has since been very ill and confined to one of his homes: Tyanthong House, 66/29 Sukhumvit Road (101), Bangkok, Thailand.
The preceding news came from SpicSaunders who apparently had left his home in Christiansted, St. Croix, Virgin Islands to do some globe circling and included Bangkok on the itinerary. Like many other classmates, Spic and his wife Mildred have long since joined the royal order of grandparents: son Kenneth D. '48 and his wife Jean live in Northbrook, Ill., and they are the parents of a boy and a girl.
With sadness the Class has lost DawsonBerry, Albert Lyon, Harold Wellman, and Richard Ladd. In Memoriam, this month or next, will have more complete reports.
Wayne and Dorothy Shirley, just returned from Europe, were at the New Hampshire game in Durham. Some of Wayne's keen and interesting observations on the trip will be shared with classmates here or in the Twoter later on.
Smart parents, bright daughter: Frank andDorothy Hutchins' daughter Dorothy, Pembroke College '71, is listed on the most recently published Dean's list from Brown University.
A late report from Cambridge says the only Twoters seen at the Harvard game were Elmer and Frances Ardiff, Ray andDoris Atwood, Haskell Cohn and grandson Tom Wolf, Len and Margaret Morrissey,Ray and Mary Louise Rambach, Bud andBarbara Winkler. Might see more if CarrollDwight would only loosen up the class treasury and buy binoculars for our scouts.
A warm welcome from the scribe of a younger class to the new secretary of an older class as Harold Braman begins reporting '21's class notes this month. With Hal reporting for '21 and Walt Dodge for '23, the '22 lad is boxed between two guys certain to show how the job should be done.
Merry Christmas to the entire '22 family.
