Andy Marshall spent an evening with the Bullens in mid-April. As usual, he brought word of the several Twoters he had encountered in his recent travels. One of them was Wally Kopf with whom Andy spent an evening in Cincinnati and to whom Andy read the riot act for his failure to show at our reunion last year.
Walt Sands came to my office today to turn over the reunion files. That revived memories of the thoroughly good time we had last June and the thoroughly efficient manner in which Walt served us as reunion chairman. From his visit I learned that Walt and Doris will be in Chicago the early part of May to attend the annual meeting of the National Association of Flour Distributors. It is quite important that Walt be there for I remember that he was elected president at the last annual meeting of that organization.
Judge Hanlon was chosen to give the opening talk for Berkshire County in the good-citizenship program sponsored by the Massachusetts Bar Association. In his . address to a group of high school seniors, Tony elaborated upon the theme that justice and its administration is the business of everybody. His plea to those youths that, as men and women, they recognize their obligations as citizens and dodge neither jury duty nor service as witnesses is one worthy of consideration on the part of youths and adults alike.
In a newspaper page of pictures depicting a Topsfield (Mass.) Hoedown it was easy to spot Joe Perkins in one of them "calling" over a hand microphone in front of his "Boxford Kuntry Dans Orchestra." Another of the pictures featured Joe's 10-year-old daughter Anne twirling in a professional manner with a partner of about the same age. Joe is acknowledged as a top New England caller and enjoys a following.
Word from the Hanover Inn reports the presence there of Van Vosburgh in late March. Effective April 25, it's Private Jed W. Bullen II of the United States Marines. Jed is stationed for the present at Parris Island, S. C. Chick Hopkins recently played hookey from his real estate operations in Indian Rocks and Clearwater Beach, Fla., for a few hours of ashing. His string was 66 kingfish ranging in weight from 9 to 25 pounds each. Whether you eat kingfish or throw them back, I don't know. In any event, that seems like a lot of fish, especially if you eat them.
Alden James, advertising head and director and executive committeeman of P. Lorillard Co., spoke before the Advertising Club of Boston at its recent luncheon meeting. Under his aegis as advertising director is Old Gold's series of color, sound films showing the life and customs of various American Indian tribes, one of the most popular educational film series ever released to the schools. The current film, Seminoles of the Everglades, last month received the annual Scholastic Magazine award as one of the ten best documentaries of the year.
Louis Brown is presently convalescing at Soldiers Home, Tilton, N. H., after a rugged two and half years during which he has spent time in three hospitals.
An address change furnished by the Alumni Records office indicates that Shaw Livermore is back in the States with a residence in Washington, D. C.
Odie Lee and I were in Hanover May 1-3 on the occasion of Class Officers meetings. Dick Litchfield attended in his capacity as a club secretary. Much to my regret, neither Carroll DWight nor Jim Hamilton were able to be there. Stewie and Louise Stearns, with Susan, arrived that Saturday morning to spend a day or two and, incidentally, to see Stewie Jr. Warren Daniell, also, came in Saturday to be on hand to watch Sam Daniell perform in the track meet that afternoon. Herb West was spied at a distance but I never caught up with him. From a short visit in his office, I learned of a recent air trip around the country taken by Olie and Elspeth Olsen. Visits with PatTobin in Texas and Mac McCoun in Omaha helped make it a memorable trip.
My supply of news items, which always seems limited, is now completely dried up so it is well that another column is not called for until October. Have a good summer!
