The lousy rainy weather I've experienced in several parts of the country over the last month should be supplanted by winter by the time you read this column. Winter means snow, and snow always makes me think of Dartmouth. I love the clean snow that crunches underfoot in Hanover and hate the dirty city slush which squishes instead.

Winter and snow also nudge the mind in the direction of the holidays. I hope that some of you will be moved to deposit some news in the Class Secretary's Christmas stocking. My file is pretty bare at the moment, although I have turned up a few items I inadvertently buried. I literally haven't had time to get out a news solicitation this fall.

Doug Gray has left Doyle Dane Bernbach in New York to become director of advertising services for Scott Paper Company in Philadelphia. He joined Doyle, etc., in 1966 and served as an account supervisor for several major consumer products. Prior to that, Doug spent ten years with Procter & Gamble in advertising and brand management and was copy supervisor for a number of P&G's consumer packaged prodducts.

Paul Wenger is a development loan officer with Uncle Sam's A.I.D. program in Djakarta, Indonesia. He and wife Sylvia had a son, Lance, in June. Paul's outside interests include photography, sailing, skin diving, and collecting shadow puppets (apparently Indonesian since they bear the name "wayang kulit"). His background includes a law degree from the University of Chicago.

Dave King is now selling life insurance for Equitable of lowa in the Chicago area. He and wife Janice have two daughters, Lynda, 14, and Kathy, 11. Dave is a lieutenant in the Naval Reserve and finds time to sail in summer and ski in winter.

Wally Bush is one of three alumni on the Dartmouth College Athletic Council for the current academic year. A Minneapolis lawyer, he is president of the Minnesota North Stars of the National Hockey League.

This month is the occasion for celebration of the 200th anniversary of Dartmouth's charter with major festivities in Hanover and many alumni clubs around the world on Saturday, December 13. If all goes well, the Third Century Fund will have gone over the top by then.

We have five classmates serving as Area Chairmen in the Third Century Fund: DickDutton, Northwest Connecticut; Al Karcher, Rochester; Hunter White, Louisiana, Arkansas and Mississippi; Jack Weingarten, Houston; and Wes Nutten, Los Angeles. In Philadelphia, "Buck" Scott and Russ Dilks are two of three area vice-chairmen. In addition, there are undoubtedly many other classmates who are hard at work as solicitors.

While the general alumni solicitation, as contrasted with contacts with potential large givers, has been underway only a relatively short period of time, December 13 is the target date. I hope that '51 will do its part in filling the College's Christmas stocking for the occasion.

To all 669 classmates and their families, spread out as we are in 42 of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and 18 foreign countries, the merriest of Christmases and a happy and prosperous New Year! And remember to make it a green Christmas for Dartmouth's Third Century Fund!
