This column is being written on the eve of a hot election here in New Jersey. Gene has already mentioned the activities of a number of our classmates in the political arena. Jim Branncn, who lives in Geneva, Ill., has filed petitions as a candidate for delegate to the Illinois Constitutional Convention. In his remarks to a local reporter he stressed "The convention's relevance to increasing the effectiveness of state and local government as opposed to increased federal intervention in local affairs." Jim is very active in local affairs and is an assistant vice president of the First National Bank of Chicago. He and Martha have two children.
Norris Knosher also has been very active in the affairs of his adopted town, Montpelier, Vt. So active, in fact, that he won the local Jaycees "Young Man of the Year" award in 1967. He has just been promoted to assistant director of advanced sales of the National Life Insurance Company of Vermont.
A recent article in the "Wall Street Journal" was headed: "Virility-Conscious Set at Dartmouth Decries the Advent of Coeds." The article went on to discuss the current invasion of Hanover by 70 semi-official female undergrads. This was a perfect lead to this month's DO YOU REMEMBER. ... In December 1959, Judy and Gene Kohn participated in a panel discussion on coeducation at Dartmouth. Judy said, "I think coeducation leads more toward reticence of speech." ... Also, Alex McGinnis and Alexter Weele won International Rotary Foundation Fellowships to study abroad ... many of us were enjoying firsthand tales of sporting life at Corey Ford's gym.
In regard to that last memory, a very recent letter from Jim Marlow paid tribute to Corey who died in August. As Jim pointed out, Corey was a good friend to many '60s. Jim and his wife, Sondra, "have started towards the 10th reunion by way of moving from California to Williamsburg, Va." They apparently had seen quite a bit of Louisiana and Dick Gale and Charlotte and BillModahl in California. Jim is teaching English at the College of William and Mary. He says "Both Sunny and I would be delighted to see any classmates, either at home or my office, which is so quaintly named, The North Outhouse of the Wren Building. As a Dartmouth alumnus, I suppose, I should be happy that it is the North One."
Charles Stuart is now a facilities engineer for G.E. Kitchen Appliances at Ellicott City, Md. It sounds like he and Frank Burnap might be able to handle the picnic chores at reunion. Frank is now involved with Operations Development for Food Fair Stores, Inc. in Ardsley, Pa.
The last news we had of Bob Postel was of his political campaign for Councilman at Large in Manhattan. Now, we find that he was married in October to loan Schwartzberg. As I mentioned, this column is being written just before election, so I do not know how Bob made out in the political campaign. Bob Argazzi also is running for office. He is running for a local office in Berlin, Conn., on the Republican ticket. The local paper seemed to feel that Bob's entry would make the local race an exciting one. Good luck to all of you.
Tom Fishbein was wed in September to Patricia Bauman. Both Tom and Pat are Phi Beta Kappa products. Tom is with the investment banking firm of Kuhn, Loeb & Co.
Cape Elizabeth, Me., is the new home of Bob Morrison and his bride of a month, Jeannette. He is with G.E. in South Portland. Dr. Owen Dow has announced the opening of his office for the practice of general surgery in Narragansett, R. I. Owen and Judy have three children.
Bob Becker, who had been in Paraguay and Argentina for the First National City Bank of New York, has joined the New England Merchants National Bank as loan officer in the International Department. Bob can compare notes with Elliot Carr, who has joined the Savings Banks Association of Massachusetts in the newly created position of director of research. Elliot was formerly treasurer of the Massachusetts Indemnity & Life Insurance Company. Meanwhile Oberlin College President, Robert Carr '29, was announcing the appointment of 44 new faculty members one of whom is Dave Segal, who will be an assistant professor in the economics department.
The O. S. Walker Company, Inc. of Worcester, Mass., has announced the appointment of Peter Ottowitz as manager of their Scientific Division, "a combination of magnetic instrumentation, laboratory magnets, power supplies, super-conducting systems" and all them things.
Joan and Neil Grey are now in Frederick, Md., where Neil is stationed at Fort Detrich. In September, Nancy Robin joined their other two children. Neil has talked to Saul Roskes, M.D., who is very happy in his pediatrics practice in Baltimore. Neil had been unhappy to have missed our 10th reunion last year until he realized it is June 19-21, 1970.
Ask a silly question, get a. ... In response to my recent concern about Waldo's move from 2202 to 2107 Buchanan in Baytown, Texas he responds, "I simply moved to a much higher class neighborhood."
