Spring cleaning season has arrived and so I'm going through every pile of "woe," as my husband calls them, which means the piles of paper that I've been meaning to get to in my free time (all five or so minutes of it). So here is all the news I've received from any Dartmouth person relating to our glorious class of 1984. If you've written and you haven't seen it appear in the column by this edition, please resend, it never got to me. I received a real live, pretty flowerdecorated card from Karen Thomsen Trost. Karen and Don recently had a little girl. Kathryn, the new baby, also has an older brother of three years of age. She (Karen, not the baby) is working as a freelance college textbook editor. Karen writes that Gail Marino and her husband Michael have a new son and live in Maryland. It seems to me that Gail should be written up in the medical journals as Karen said that the baby was born after Gail had bed rest "for about a million years." That has to be news!

Becca Haerle is living near me in Washington state and got married this past November. (I hope to God that this is true...when Karen wrote to me November was the future not the past!) Last but not least, Cheryl Baylor and husband Karl are living in Florida and are relatively recent homeowners. I got a very personal notice (NOT!) about Dwayne Gathers (it was a Xeroxed article routed through the alumni records office). It seems that California Gov. Pete Wilson appointed Dwayne as the director of the California Office of Trade and Investment in-Johannesburg, South Africa. Very, very exciting stuff in this article: Dwayne is the founder and president of the Hanover Group Inc, an international business consulting firm. Before founding this business he was a special assistant to the assistant secretary for African affairs at the U.S. Department of State. I have to say I really enjoyed this article about Dwayne; the only flaw he seems to have is that he's a Republican.

On the theme of Africa, Dale Perry wrote to tell me that he is living in Nairobi and trying desperately to catch up with John Corbett (no doubt it was this newsbreaking column that told Dale that he and John were in the same city in Africa). Another really exciting read. It seems that Dale went to Nairobi looking for greener business pastures after living in Moscow. He and his partner, Carol Coldren, will be moving to Kampala, Uganda, where she is opening a bank office. Wow!

Dale wins the "great mate" award for moving to Uganda before finding a job to accompany his wife. If you're heading toward Dale you can contact him at . Additionally, I'm pleased to say that Dale ratted out some of his friends: Andy Dunn was finishing his cabin the Cascade Mountains the last Dale knew (and he adds that it looked great!). "Chris Ramsden's family was growing quickly in Rhode Island and Gordon Piatt was married in the spring in New York City and is working at Night line.Andy Anagnus was married in September in Long Beach." May I just add that I take no responsibility for any of the spelling of these names because Dale's handwriting is pretty darn bad.

One more wedding to report on. I got mail from Sally Parker (who I am assuming is Bill Parker's mother). Sally reports that on April 22, 1995, Bill Parker married Charlotte Banister in Oxford, England. Bill and Charlotte are living in London. Bill is an economist with Capital Research International; Charlotte works for the United Nations. Sally mentioned a number of '84s who attended the wedding but since I don't have any other information on them I won't list them here. One note though, the Tuck attendees she listed were listed as couples with T'92 after the couple's name: does that mean that both husband AND wife attended Tuck? Just some food for thought. A special thanks to you, Sally, for ratting out your son. I know he's going to call you now about this.

On the interesting and more-uniquethan-most career front, Lane von Herzen spoke at the American Association of University Women at its San Clemente- Capistrano Bay branch. Lane has written two novels: Copper Crown and TheUnfastened Heart. The latter is being made into a movie as well. Gee, she's doing all that writing, you'd think she could drop me a card ( maybe even a decorated flower card like Karen's, see above).

Last but not least on the spring list is a card from "9" Sanders telling us that husband Doug Hanshaw "climbed mountains, scaled ice cliffs, waded glacial rivers, slopped through swamps, and crawled through alder thickets in search of schooling silver salmon. He got skunked." 9, tell him that there are some easier ways. He could fly to Seattle, climb a hill, wade through city traffic, slop through the crowds at Pike Place Market, and be guaranteed to get salmon and see a little "flying fish" at the same time. (Come to Seattle to understand the flying fish reference.)

Until next month.
