With 12 lettermen returning and a contingent of promising sophomore prospects, Coach Ab Oakes heads into his fourth season with an eye toward the Indians' best season in the last five. Last year the Indians finished 7-14-2 but moved up to fourth place in the Ivy League race with a 5-7 mark. Oakes figures he has the manpower to improve on both records this winter.
The junior line of center Ken Davidson and wings Dave Hill and Jeff Kosak produced 92 points last year and should be more effective this season when Hill returns to form after undergoing surgery on his shoulder. In the meantime, sophomore Steve Arndt has moved into Hill's slot opposite Kosak.
Sophomore Mike Turner is centering a second line of senior wings Kent Nyberg (high scorer as a sophomore) and Tom Coffman, and sophomores Mike Green and Andy Sormunen round out the front line talent. Turner's 64 points (including 22 goals) paced the freshman scoring last year.
Defensively, Oakes has a seasoned pair in Captain Denis O'Neill and junior Vince Orchard and an outstanding sophomore in Don Anderson who is working with Mike Barle, a junior. Sophomore Dan Holland gives Oakes a reliable swing man on defense. In the goal, senior Tom Schuster produced several outstanding performances last year and is the man to beat. The man who could beat him is sophomore Dale Dunning.
