There haven't been too many days this fall when George Beim, the Dartmouth soccer coach, has been able to smile.
He had a smile, though, after the Green had whipped Columbia 5-0, a victory that was Dartmouth's fourth of the season (and probably the last considering the final two dates are with Cornell and Penn) and saw more goals scored by a Dartmouth team than any since 1963 when Cornell was zipped by the same score.
The decision was Dartmouth's second in the Ivy League and gave the Green a 4-5-1 record with two to play. That's twice as many wins as Beim's team had last year.
It's been a season in which Beim relied heavily on sophomores. They came through gradually, particularly Frank Gallo and Dave Coles, but the injury picture didn't help matters since there was next to zero depth on the bench.
Still, when one considers that Dartmouth stands fifth in the Ivy League ranks and that the upper four teams—Penn, Harvard, Brown, and Cornell-were all selected for NCAA tournament play, it's reasonable to presume that the Green is improving in a league that constitutes the nation's toughest collegiate aggregation.
Put the sophomores together with a freshman team that finished with an 8-2 record (the losses were to Harvard and Brown) and the makings of some of that depth that is currently missing seems to be in the offing.
