Guest Columnist this month — Shep Wolff, the "Hoimet" of South Pomfret. While sitting by the blazing fire in his living-room on snow-bound Stage Road, Shep managed to append a personal note on each of the bills; for class dues which he sent out. The response was magnificentmore than enough news for this month and probably next month, plus a whole batch Shep sent to John Boermeester, newsletter sage. Let's glimpse at some of the tidbits.
Skeet Thomas, now in his third year on Long Island, is with Certified Industries Division, U. S. Steel. He says, "Maybe a little later I can fill you in with a few interesting odds and ends."
From Irv Bettman: "I've been blessed with a pleasant but not newsworthy life to date in Cincinnati. Three children, all married, and four grandchildren. Satisfactory business career, again with no unusual items - vice president of the David G. Joseph Co. Along with wife Gertrude attended the Alumni College in Hanover last August, and had a wonderful timeshe wants to retire there. Seems not a bad idea to me but I think I'll take her up there in mid-winter sometime before she really decides."
Dick Chase: "Except for a second operation at the end of November my leg is coming along OK. Hope this clears the way to the golf season." Still complications from the Salerno landing, Dick?
Henry Johnson intones: "I guess we are all getting older and should take care of ourselves." What with all the H.K. flu and pneumonia around, this sounds like good advice, says Shep. Incidentally, Shep denies that he really is a hermit — he claims he takes his hoots off every night before going to bed! Would you believe it?
Charlie Warne says, "Still v.p. of Industrial and Marine Division of North American Rockwell. No big family events to report. At my age I guess no news is good news." At your age, Charlie? What about the rest of us now flirting with 60?
Here's news from another retiree. SkipClow reports: "I retired a few years ago and moved back to Rochester, N. H. Am on the board of directors of a couple of banks and the hospital. Various hobbies take up the rest of my time." Hobbies, Skip? Fill us in on the hobbies.
Si Leach writes: "Sorry couldn't get down to any games but have been quite busy since October 1 as the new president of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, involving much travellingbut fun and very interesting." From the "Toronto Globe and Mail" a three-column half-tone of Si being greeted by Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau. Wish we could get a glossy of this for inclusion in these pages.
From Nels Greenlund: "Son Dr. Nelson C. Jr. has completed two years in the Air Force and is now a resident physician at the University of Missouri hospital. Daughter Sally is deputy curator of the Colorado State Historical Museum in Denver. Carole and I are trying to travel as. much as possible and still I have to keep the business going to pay for the travel." Shades of Beany and Eleanor Thorn! Incidentally, Beany reports in: "Over in Boston the other day picked up a Christmas present in the home we were visiting, a book entitled 'Wilderness Kingdom' and appreciation of Father Nicholas Point, Pioneer Records of Life in the Northwestlovely volume with a long prologue by a big shot in the Smithsonian Institute, one John C. Ewers small world, n'est-ce-pas?" This note must mean that Beany and Eleanor are back from South America where they presumably were speaking Spanish to anyone who would listen.
But, according to Bob Baumrucker, the old needier"please.extend my condolences to Beany Thorn for boning up on Spanish when it is understood by so few people in South America." Bob is still tilting with the Museum people at Hanover and even with your graying old Class Sec'y. In the case of the last-mentioned, Bob claims his quoted exchanges are somewhat out of context. Indeed, yes, Robert. Wish I could print it all, and do not wish to slant anything. For instance, regarding the valedictorial last June, Bob says further, "My original premise wasn't concerned with an individual's ability to learn, but rather where Dartmouth left him after four years of guidance. I'd feel it highly commendable if the College could elevate a baboon even to grades like mine'— unless the baboon still scampered for the trees when trouble moved into its vacuum." Then again, maybe out of context: "Summa cum laude isn't so important as summa cum laude in what?" OK, Bob, but we've got to clear this up, somehow. What did you say?
Allan McLean writes: "Took in Princeton and Harvard games, not with usual satisfaction. Son, Allan Cameron is a junior; earned his 'D' as a sophomore in Lacrosse."
At the Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company in Milwaukee, Bill Minehan has acquired an additional title: Director, Policy Benefits. He combines his new responsibility with that of secretary of the company, a position he has held since 1952. He has been with the company since graduating from Dartmouth and has specialized in advanced underwriting, with particular reference to the use of life insurance in business and estate planning.
Parker Soule, known to some of us as "P.S.," still keeps the mails busy with news of the Class. For instance, Jack Weatherly's son John has been accepted for the Class of 1973 on "early decision." Also, George andMary Hawkins spent the Christmas holidays in Bermuda"for a change," they say.
Clipping reports that Bob Oelman in a recent speech to the 55th National Foreign Trade Convention took out after the government's mandatory curbs on foreign investment.
Another clipping reports on Gay Freeman's moving upstairs to chairman and chief executive officer of the First National Bank of Chicago, second-largest bank in the city with assets of over $6 billion. This change to take effect February 4.
On behalf of President Dickey, who was at a Trustee meeting, Vice President EmeritusOrt Hicks '21 presents a belated wedding present (a watercolor by Librarian EmeritusDick Morin '24) to Alumni Councilor Marvin Braverman '29 and his wife Anne, whowere married in Washington last February 17.
