My cordial thanks for three green cards. Evelyn (Mrs. Speedy) Fleet wrote, "I spent the Christmas holidays with my daughter Patricia F. Beede and her family in Concord, Mass. My son Charles (class of '53) and his family joined us there a lovely family reunion. If all goes well I am going to Spain and Portugal in May."
News from Jack Hubbell: "For ten days I'll be in Phoenix visiting Rynie Rothschild and his wife, Lu. Rynie is a thrill. He was both Hockey Champ and Golf Champ and a 2-way Captain. A couple of weeks later I'm visiting Cory and Abby Litchard. I'll be on my way to Hanover Inn for a week's stay. Ruth, my wife, will be in Europe buying items for her antique business. There is a big event of ten days and nights in N.Y. City every late January.
And from Larry Nardi: "I'm delighted with the January issue of the Smoker. The larger type makes it so much easier to read. I hope future issues will be printed with the same type. And I thank Kent Pierce '78 for his heart-warming eulogy of his 'Gramps.' It softened the blow of Harry's untimely death."
Mary Noyes asked me "Was the name of that senior play Oh Lady Be Good or was that the name of a song?" Can anyone remember?
Is it no longer safe to go out after dark? Maybe we should do as others do to drunk drivers. In Turkey drunk drivers are taken 20 miles from town by the police and forced to walk back under police escort. In Poland, jailed and fined and forced to attend political lectures. In Bulgaria, a second conviction results in execution.
Lester Lambert, who has survived his prep school classmates, Lundquist and Miner, will be interested in these comments by Dick Litchfield '22: "The Public Latin School of Boston is the oldest school in the United States with a continuous existence. It was founded April 23, 1635, more than a year before Harvard College. A special something its graduates are proud of. Of the 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence five had been pupils of the school. They were John Hancock, Samuel Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Robert Treat Paine, and William Hooper."
