Karl Michael reached an historic milestone in his long career as Dartmouth's swimming coach on January 11 when the Indians romped over Brown 73-28. The victory was the 200th for Michael in dual meet competition but the spice for Mike was the 202nd win.
That came in the Alumni Gym pool, as well, and was a 62-51 triumph over Army's talented swimmers. The victory was the fourth of the season for Dartmouth and the Indians' toughest test to that point. It was an exemplary team effort as Michael's swimmers consistently turned in a series of "best" times against the Cadets.
Captain Terry Robinson from Rye, N. Y., launched the victory with a winning performance in the 1000-yard freestyle and came back with a second in the 200-yard butterfly. Robinson was bitterly disappointed as he failed in his bid for points in the gruelling 500-yard freestyle because he felt it might cost the Indians the meet.
Sophomore Dave Freyberg from Sandusky, Ohio, turned off Robinson's gloom as he clipped nearly six seconds from his best time ever in the 200-yard breaststroke to defeat Army's All-American, Barry Kerr, late in the meet and diver Mike Brown (Denver, Colo.) clinched the victory as he and Joe Glaser, also from Denver, finished one-two in the three-meter dive.
Victories over Springfield and Williams add to the Brown and Army meets in the swimmers' early success story. The road gets much tougher as the season progresses, however, with Yale, Princeton, and Harvard standing ready to test the Green.
