We don't have a formal Dartmouth Club in Alabama, but we did have a gathering of the Dartmouth alumni on the occasion of the visit of the Dartmouth Crew to nearby Lake Martin on Saturday, March 29, when the Dartmouth Crew raced against Alabama.
At noon that day, we had a get-together of Dartmouth alumni, Dartmouth undergraduates and their parents and friends generally. Over 100 attended the barbecue lunch we had, and there must have been over 500 people who viewed the race from the shore later on.
The parents of Mike Kearney '69, of Mankato, Minn., and the R. C. Princes of Decatur, Ill., parents of Doug Prince '70, joined the parents of Tommy McWhorter '69 to enjoy the race —so people came from many parts, and it was a glorious day for our College. The weather was gorgeous one of those early spring days we have down here - and the breeze was gentle enough to allow a good race. A good time was had by all, and I am sure that there have never been as many men of Dartmouth in Alabama at one time as there were at Lake Martin that day. Some of those who signed the register we had prepared and whom we remember being there are listed below: Louise and Bob Bard '19; Douglas Wilson '31; Charlie Evans '35 and wife; Jean and Bucks Weil '35; Fred Thorpe '38 and daughter; Lamar Agee '44 and wife; Ernest Armstrong '43; Frances and Everett Johnson '42; Phyl and Phil Hallam '41; Virginia and Bob Weil '4O; Margaret and Bubber McWhorter, parents of, and Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Price, grandparents of, Tom McWhorter '69, member of the Crew from Montgomery; the Kearneys, of Mankato, Minn., and the R. C. Princes, of Decatur, Ill., parents of Crewmen Kearney and Prince; Phil Hallam Jr. '69; Mrs. Warren Simpson, mother of Kelly Simpson '69; Bill Pelham '70 and parents; James Folmar '72 and parents; Gene Elrod '71 and parents; Tommy Wool '72 and parents; Dick Godbold '72 and parents; Ken McGill '72; and Denny Warner '72.
That night Colonel Phil Hallam '41, along with the Montgomery Chamber of Commerce and the Montgomery alumni, hosted the Crew and their dates, as well as local undergraduates and their parents to dinner at the Gunter Air Force Base Officers' Club, where Colonel Hallam is the Commander.
Present at the annual meeting of the Dartmouth Club of Central Florida were SeaverPeters '54, Trustee Jack Dodd '22, Dick Proctor '43, local chairman of the ThirdCentury Fund drive, and Bud Wesselmann '27, club president.
