At this stage of the season, Dartmouth's cross-country team is headed for its best season in more than 25 years. The Indians took a 6-0 record into the first Harvard meet they had a chance to win in more than a decade.
"We have better strength at the top of the ladder and some strong runners to fill in behind," said Coach Ken Weinbel, now in his second season.
The top of the ladder is occupied by a junior, Eric Potter, and two sophomores, Tom Shiland and Bob Varsha. This trio was instrumental in Dartmouth's string of perfect wins over Colgate, Yale, Columbia, Boston State, and Merrimack and a near-perfect performance in defeating Brown.
It's a healthy situation when Varsha, from Northport, N. Y., can be the pacesetter and still retain enough energy to place third behind Potter or Shiland (who have been Dartmouth's consistent 1-2 performers).
Add to these runners another junior, Steve Shirey, sophomore Larry Krol and Captain Parke Rublee and you have the names that have been appearing at the top of the finish order throughout the fall.
The depth was to get its most severe test at Harvard but the general impression is that Dartmouth is returning to a contending position in the Heptagonal cross-country picture.
