The need for early performances from a key group of sophomores may hold the answer to the success of Coach Whitey Burnham's 1968 soccer team.

"We have a junior captain (Pete Linton from Philadelphia) for the first time in Dartmouth soccer history and a lot of sophomores are pressing for starting positions," said Burnham.

Linton and Bill Staudt from Accra, Ghana, dominate the picture in the front line, while Greg Church from Elkhart, Ind., and Denis O'Neill from Greens Farms, Conn., feature the fullback situation. With the graduation of goalie Bob McGee that spot is wide open. "We have five men who could take the job," said Burnham.

The objective is to improve on last season's 2-8-1 record, including 1-5-1 in Ivy play.

"Brown is the team to beat," said Burnham. The Indians are host to the Bruins on October 19 in a crucial Ivy contest.

"If I have a feeling of optimism this fall, it's because I look back to our 1964 championship team - which was dominantly a sophomore group," said Burnham.
