During the past fiscal year corporations contributed a record $1,297,715 in gifts to Dartmouth, somewhat more than the $1,133,405 received the year before. Both amounts include substantial payments on Third Century Fund pledges. Not included in the total, however, is over $3-million worth of computer hardware and special equipment grants, gifts to the Third Century Fund.
Recognizing the effect of the Third Century Fund in the 1969-70 results, the comparison with receipts for the fiscal years 1954-55—$87,850, 1960-61 —$344,692, and 1965-66 — $558,927 is still gratifying. Sharing in the support this year were 442 companies. Matching plans accounted for $272,913 of the total.
A banner year was also recorded by the Bequest and Estate Planning Program which was inaugurated in 1951 to encourage alumni, families, and friends to make bequests and lifetime estate planned gifts to the College. With the past year's receipts of $5,256,217, the program has received more than $43-million during the twenty-year span. Over half of this total has been given in the last five years.
Topping $5-million for the second year in a row, the 1969-70 bequests included 38 new bequests amounting to $2,267,806. One of them was the largest bequest ever from a "Woman of Dartmouth," almost one million dollars from the estate of Lavinia Rose Wilson, widow of Albion B. Wilson of the Class of 1895.
