Aha! We have our first response to those nine million communications we've addressed about the country. From Helena, Mont., comes word from Bud Little who fit the following news on to the back of a postcard. "Still at it in Montana doing a general practice; family medicine and general surgery. My kids are grown! Jim (27) is an intern in Madison, Wis.; Sue (25) is a lab tech working in Denver; Roger is a senior at Colorado Univ. when he is not skiing around the world in high-level competition. Mary and I grow older but not smarter. We still raise horses and a few black angus cows. We travel a bit as I am still involved in skiing, currently as vice president of the World Ski Federation and secretary of the Alpine World Cup Commission. When not in Helena I may be seen skiing in Jackson, Wyo. I don't see many Dartmouths since I guess we lost our old school tie." (Note: at press time Roger Little had placed second in the NCAA Giant Slalom on Cannon Mt.).

There was a '39 gathering on a festive occasion in New Haven this winter. Dartmouth took Yale 10-6 in hockey before such celebrated fans as the Bob Dickgiessers, the Duke Lyons, the Ted Wolfes, the Dusty Rohdes, Bert and Sally MacMannis.

From Mike Ellis we received a clipping on the latest in the world of Haven Falconer. After 25 years with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, most recently as director of the production research department, Haven has resigned and formed his own company. It's called Production-Research Inc., headquartered in Puerto Rico with offices in Manhattan. The company is already active in the production of a series of educational films on English as a second language for Puerto Rico with plans to engage in independent feature production in the offing.

Ray Anderson has just been made general manager of a new Laminated and Coated Products Division of the St. Regis Paper Company. He comes off a similar post with the Sisalkraft Div., based in Attleboro, Mass.

And here's a cliff-hanger. Sam Lawton, Mayor of Highland Park, Ill., was one of four choices in a general election to pick two in the 32nd District, Lake Forest area, for some office that the newspaper clipping never identified. Sam apparently doubles as a lawyer with Altheimer, Gray, Naiburg, Strasburger and Lawton. He is vice chairman of the Illinois Air Pollution Control Board, a former City Councilman, plan commission member and zoning board of appeals member. Sam also served as president of the Highland Park School District 108 Board. With those credentials, we find it hard to believe that Sam could have lost the election. But you'll have to await the sequel before we give you the true ending. Keep us posted, Sam.

The old fire horses really seem to miss the barn. We have a thoughtful and much appreciated piece of correspondence from erstwhile scribe Hank Conkle from which we will quote:

On October 16 our son-in-law David Swann, who was with us at Reunion, was named vice-president of Wachovia Bank. On October 25, our son John started his career in the Navy. He is at OCS in Newport, R. I., for a cold, hard winter of work, but he has kept his sense of humor and enjoys the whole bit. You may remember that the Big Green turned him down some years back, so it was a great coincidence that one of his best friends in his company is Randy Wallick '69, the Captain of the Dartmouth football team last year. John enjoyed the wonderful hospitality of Lil and Jack Cumming for Thanksgiving in Providence, and he was able to fly home for Christmas. His short-clipped hair, his military bearing, and his boyish enthusiasm make us want to recommend that Navy program to any classmates with sons just out of college. On January 20 our daughter Nancy gave birth to Christopher Collins Swann. Dot and I have patiently stayed here in the mountains for one week, but we are off tomorrow to visit our grandson and take over the night duty for a few days.

Our business and our civic and church responsibilities are mushrooming, but we'll always have time for Dartmouth and are already planning to make the Princeton weekend next fall.

Hank has also been active as the director and secretary of the Mountain Planning Development Corp., which among other things has succeeded in bringing a new light industry to Cashiers, N. C. Cashiers, being a summer resort, had to be choosey about its sorely needed year-round industry, so they lined up a plastics business who operate on a smokeless, and odor-free basis. A helping hand in scouting down the new business was afforded Hank by none other than Bob Davidson, to make it a '39 project.

We regret to report that we rail across a note in the good grey Times recording the death of Mrs. Enid S. McMillen, mother of Les McMillen, on Jan. 15. Our sympathy and that of the class to Les on his loss.

Cornie Miller sends us a sequel to an item covered a month or so ago. It's a generous portion of a column devoted to Dr.Lewin G. Joel Jr., superintendent of schools for Clinton and Killingworth, Conn. Seems that Lew was nominated for a trip to the Soviet Union by the State School Officials, who said he was one "who would serve with distinction the U. S. educational community as a participant in an international field study in Russia." Lew had made a similar trip two years ago, when he was one of a handful of American educators chosen to make a study tour of India. For health reasons, Lew has declined the honor. The piece ends with a comment from which we quote: "But I wonder if he (Joel) sometimes doesn't long for the comparatively carefree days of years gone by, when he could still find time to make music, playing in the popular local orchestras." Probably a silly question isn't it, Lew?

In the change of address department we have a new one for Mrs. Walt Magee, to 142 North Sugar Rd., New Hope, Pa. 18938. Brig. General Jim Feeley Jr., back from Vietnam to Asst. Wing Commander, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, MCAS, El Toro, Calif. 92630. Dick Durrance, from East 50th St. to 10 W. 66th St., New York, N. Y. 10023. And Loris Smith at Bryant-Stratton Business College as a teacher, is residing at 8217 North Poplar Dr., Milwaukee, Wis. 53217.
