By the time you receive this some of you may be packing or some from far-away places may be already en route to Hanover for the Big Fiftieth, and wouldn't it be something if everybody could make it, the one big chance of a lifetime to renew acquaintances with Classmates not seen for some time and in some cases perhaps not since graduation.
Henry Spero has a new address, 2800 Lake Shore Drive, Chicago. This must be a near move as the zip code remains the same.
Rod Taylor, a member of the U.S. Ski team and son of the Robert Steinholtzes, came close to the top in the National Alpine Ski Championship, being edged out by only a few points.
This month's meeting of the Dartmouth Club of Sarasota is a luncheon at the Azure Tides Hotel at Lido Beach with our well-known and popular speaker, Ellis Briggs '21, who needs no introduction to the '20 Class. Although most of the northern '20s have gone back we are looking forward to a '20-'21 table.
Ralph and Mildred Sunergren came to visit us while they were vacationing in Englewood, which is just south of us. They were going to stop also to see Jean LeBoutillier who lives near where they were staying.
We invited Nate and Mildred Whiteside to stop over on their way north from their vacation on Sanibel Island. We had also invited Laddie Myers from Clearwater and it was our intention to corral the local '20s and have a get-together party but a member of our immediate family was on the critical list at the hospital at that time which interrupted our plans. Consequently the group was small but we enjoyed a good gab-fest. Mildred had a nice tan, Nate looked very fit and Laddie was quite himself as always.
We have heard from several class widows recently and they all are very touched and appreciative to the 1920 Class for the books which are being placed in Baker Library in memory of their husband classmates. Although it was not our error we apologized to Helen for the misspelling of Paul Giffin's name in his In Memoriam notice. She was not upset, in fact she said it so often happened that Paul had been quite accustomed to being called Griffin as well as Giffin. Edna Youmans has been very ill while visiting her daughter and family in Caracas. She is now much recovered and looking forward to getting back to the States to her home in Orford, N. H., and to seeing you all at Reunion, come June.
Those who knew well the Harry Sampsons are shocked and saddened to learn of the sudden death of Dorothy on March 25 of a heart attack. The only consolation is that both Harry and Dorothy have given to George, their only son, a fine foundation and heritage on which to build his new life since both parents have so recently had to leave him. After Sammie's death and after George had gone away to college, Dorothy sold their home on Downing Road and bought a smaller home across the river in Norwich. She was adjusting well, making herself happy and contented and everybody had great admiration for her. It was the Sampsons who started the Open House for '20 get-togethers after Hanover football games which they carried on till the time of Sammie's death, then Pat Holbrook, just two houses away, took over the custom which is greatly appreciated.
And the count-down continues. "Soup," Dr. Ralph Campbell who was a prominent Madison physician and professor of gynecology and obstetrics at the University of Wisconsin, died on March 25 after a short illness. Also Ken Fenderson died on March 20 after an illness of several months. Laddie Myers, Gugger Fisk, Bing Whitaker. Howard Hitchcock, Pick Hill, and Sig Sigler attended the funeral services representing the St. Petersburg Dartmouth Club and the Class. The sympathy of the Class goes to Mariel Campbell and Marie Fenderson and the other members of these two classmates' families and In Memoriam notices will appear in this or a subsequent issue of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE.
Paul Richter writes that Bob Burroughs '21 has extended an invitation for the '20-'21 classes to have their summer picnic again at his lovely and interesting estate farm in Canterbury, N. H., and it would be O.K. if this year it could be without rain although the deluge didn't keep anybody from having a grand good time. It is hoped that those coming for Reunion from far-off places can stay over for this picnic also which is to be held Saturday, July 11. He will be happy to give further information to anybody interested; his address is 212 South Street, Concord, N. H. 03033. And. by-the-way, Paul's name appears again in "Who's Who in the East," 1969 issue.
Doc and Harriet Miller returned from an African safari. They traveled over 22,000 miles of interesting and strange country and saw over 10,000 animals. Their flying weather with the Ethiopian Airlines was very good and they saw much beautiful country from Addis Ababa to Frankfurt where they visited their daughter, her husband and baby for four days. Their trip took them along the Red Sea, across the Nubian Desert, along the blue Nile over Luxor to Athens. While in Addis Ababa they were permitted to visit the Haile Selassie's personal area and he offered them two lion cubs which they were tempted to bring back for Reunion mascots but transportation problems made it prohibitive. They are now looking forward to Reunion in Hanover and have also signed up for Alumni College in August which will be their sixth session. We are hoping also they will get to the '20-'21 summer picnic in July in Canterbury. I am sure the Millers took many pictures and we can look forward to seeing them in Hanover - come June.
The April issue of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE is carrying on Page 51 an article telling about the Reading and Conference Room which was established memorializing Sal Andretta. I am sure you will want to look it up if it slipped your attention.
Another clipping we have of interest was an editorial which appeared in the "Wall Street Journal" in October of last year written by none other than our own Sherry Baketel on "Coeducation?" which gives food for thought and worthy of being reproduced here were there room.
Here's hoping to see you all in Hanover on the three big days which I am sure is marked on all of your calendars, June 12, 13 and 14. Drive carefully, and here's a Wah Hoo Wah for 20's/50th.
