Greetings from Atlanta! Late last spring, I had the pleasure of returning to Hanover for Class Officers Weekend. Our class was also represented by Jay Brown, Steve Adnopoz, and Jim Bullion. We heard reports on the state of the College, toured the new Hitchcock Hospital, and were entertained by the Aires. Overall, things seemed to be going well, with the administration giving strong consideration to tearing down the old hospital and building new buildings that are "architecturally compatible" with the existing Georgian style architecture of Dartmouth Row and other major buildings. Among the alumni, there was strong support for tearing down two architecturally incompatible and insignificant buildings, Bradley and Gerry.
Another major topic was the payment of class dues. Please be aware that class dues primarily pay for your subscription to this magazine. Dues do not pay for class officer travel (we paid our own way). So pay your dues early and often!
On the way to Hanover, I stopped over in Boston. I tried to get Christine Hughes by phone, but she was not home. Chris is one of the lawyers in Harvard's general counsel office. Now that Harvard's president has announced his retirement, maybe Chris can move up to his job and run the place!
Since I don't have any more news, I am once again putting my Reach Out America plan to use. I called Karen Altman and was surprised to find I had her mother's number. While I was not able to reach Karen, her mother told me she is a doctor practicing at UCLA. I also spoke to Lecia Kassanavoid Ardrey, who is working as a geophysicist in Houston. This job involves mapping underground formations in the search for oil. Although in earlier years Lecia's work involved trips to oil fields and offshore rigs, she is less involved in fieldwork now. I tried to reach Don Ankeny in Minneapolis, but instead got his answering machine with a message recorded by his young son: "Daddy's not home now ..." Also in Minneapolis, I found Linda Bayrd at home. She loves Minneapolis and was looking forward to a fun summer with all the recreational activities in and around the city.
I tried to contact Hamp Bekarian in Glendale, Calif., but was only able to leave a message. I spoke with Kenny Landau, who had just returned to Chicago from a two-week trip to Spain and England. Kenny and his wife, Helen, showed their fortitude by taking their two-year-old daughter along with them on the trip. Kenny works for Blue Cross/Blue Shield, working on strategy and acquisition issues. While he does not see many '78s in Chicago, he keeps up with Bill Devine, who is a commercial real estate broker in San Jose, Calif. He also hears from Ed Snook, who is working in a family business in Maine. Ed and his wife, Catherine, had twins last year.
I also reached Lauren Tanny, who is living in San Francisco. Lauren was traveling in Dallas during the quake, so she and her home came through undamaged. After working in the wine industry since business school, Lauren has recently resigned her position with The Wine Group and is currently looking at other opportunities. With Northern California's beautiful weather it is easy to be distracted from job hunting, but she is enjoying the opportunity to look at a range of options.
Well, that's the news. Send more!
