MEN OF DARTMOUTH GIVE A ROUSE! . . . : It is most interesting and gratifying to note that in a list of Total Class Giving to June 30, 1969 your class, The Great Class of '42, ranks #20 out of a total of 76 classes.... '42 is also the youngest class in the top twenty, is the only one of the 1940's to be so listed, and is ahead of all classes graduated in the 1930's with the exception of 1930 and 1931.... The over $1,300,000 your class has contributed has helped to maintain the strength of the College and to prepare a foundation for the new decade and the Third Century.

A TIP OF THE INDIAN HEADDRESS. . . . : To Head Coach George Blaney and his Dartmouth basketball team for accomplishing the first winning season in a decade (13-12), for most wins in a season in a decade, for the most Dartmouth wins in the Ivy League in a decade, and for the single game scoring record of 100 points (versus Harvard). Their courage and character produced come-from-behind wins against Vanderbilt, Harvard, Connecticut, Princeton, and Yale. Winning basketball has been restored at Dartmouth and all signs point toward the continuation of that tradition in the foreseeable future.

In South Norwalk, Conn., Dave Warren has been promoted to vice-president for sales at the Nash Engineering Co. He has been with the firm since 1946 when he started as a sales engineer. Continuing in the sales field, he has risen to positions of increasing responsibility. In 1967 he was appointed director of sales and held this position until his recent election as an officer of the company. He and Jeanette and their four children live in Wilton, Conn.

FUTURE GOVERNOR SPEAKS.Attorney General James S. Erwin, challenger for the Maine gubernatorial post in the November election, spoke recently to the students of Warsaw Junior High School. His topic was pollution in Maine and the work his office has been doing in this field. Jim has served in the Maine House of Representatives and and in the State Senate. He has practiced law in New York since 1949, is married and has four children.

ABOUT 42'S JOHN J. TEAL JR., THE MUSK OX, AND ALASKA.... : Many years ago Vilhjalmur Stefansson, great Arctic explorer and writer of the early 20th century, proposed that musk ox be domesticated and raised for their wool, regarded by many as the finest natural wool in the world. Some 15 years ago John J. Teal Jr. captured and transported a dozen musk ox to Vermont in an experiment intended to test Stefansson's idea, but the Vermont climate proved too mild for the hardy musk ox. Recently John, in cooperation with Dartmouth English Professor Chauncey Loomis Jr. attempted to rerun the experiment in the natural habitat of the ox. He went to the Bering Sea's Nunivak Island to capture a herd and Professor Loomis accompanied him as photographer, chronicler, and scholar.

One of the outcomes of this venture was a film shown on the CBS network on Friday, March 20 from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. entitled "Wild River, Wild Beasts."

BATTLE ON DRUG ABUSE CONTINUES....: Our Dr. James A. O'Shea of Andover spoke once again on "Our Response to the Drug Problem" at the morning worship service at the South Church, Andover several weeks ago. Jim is one of many people waging an ongoing battle against the narcotics abuse problem in our nation.

A PLUG FOR THE DARTMOUTH COURSE GUIDE....: A recent release from the Enrollment Committee of the Alumni Council draws attention to this year's Dartmouth Course Guide entitled "Looney Tunes," a publication that was useful for enrollment purposes this year and which could be of interest to alumni. The Guide can even serve as a supplement to the College's catalog of courses in allowing an applicant to study in depth the offerings of a certain department. It further presents the undergraduate view of Dartmouth professors and illustrates the opportunity for dialogue and criticism among faculty and students ... the chance for interested students to participate creatively and constructively in presenting ideas on course content. A number of alumni are already patrons and regular subscribers....Those of you who are interested in joining the group of regulars or in having this year's copy should address Dartmouth Course Guide, 301 Bartlett, Hinman Box 749, Hanover, N. H. 03755. (The price is $3.50.)
