"Oh-h-h-h-h ... Eleazar Wheelock was a very pious man — He went into the wilderness ..."
Dear Eleazar,
As we put to bed our last column and last ALUMNI MAGAZINE of the 1968-69 college year we must admit that all has not been sweetness and light on the campuses throughout our Land. The growth of our nation and our nation's institutions, Eleazar, has brought us face-to-face with complex problems which all but the very discerning could not have anticipated just a few years ago. Many, many people are "casting their bread upon the waters," many voices are asking to be heard, and some are not asking but are "demanding" some most reasonable and some most outlandish programs and changes. The keynote, however, Eleazar, seems to be rapid change.
Speaking of "change," our adopted honorary member of the Great Class of '42, Dean Myron Tribus of Thayer School, is facing one of his own as he departs for Washington, D. C., to serve as Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Science and Technology in President Richard Nixon's administration. The entire Class joins in extending congratulations and in wishing good luck and good health to Dean Tribus. Dartmouth now has several worthy men in key government positions.
Yes, Eleazar, we lost a dean and gained a dean during the past several months. And the Class of '42 extends a friendly welcome to Carroll W. Brewster, new Dean of the College replacing Thaddeus Seymour who took over one of the most challenging positions in the country today (Need we say more?). Like you, Eleazar, Mr. Brewster follows Dartmouth's earliest historic precedent, and comes to us as a Yale graduate 200 years to the year since you founded Dartmouth College.
On the weekend of May 2-4 the Annual Class Officers Weekend hit Hanover, however this was one of the few meetings that the '42 class secretary has had to miss. Some planning was done at this meeting relating to our Fall Reunion on Penn game weekend, October 10-11, 1969. Also appreciation was extended to Richard Cardozo and his committee on "Careers and Conscience," the course sponsored by the Class in the Dartmouth Experimental College. Further news and developments related to Class Officers Weekends, both past and future, will be forthcoming in Milt Williams' brilliantly conceived commentary in the class newsletter, which helps to keep all classmates, spouses, and sibs. informed.
In conclusion, Eleazar, the song written in your honor refers directly to your going "into the wilderness to teach" ... today we still have "wildernesses" ... and if we are not keen, perceptive and discriminating (but that is not a good word for "us to use these days) we can slip into one before we know it! We seem to be living with such a variety of "wildernesses" these days, Eleazar. ... What would you recommend we use to get out? Are gradi ad parnassum, Bibles, drums, and rum really all that effective? Some people today, Eleazar, are relying on "pot" and some are taking "potshots" at almost anything. We know the emphasis you put on teaching, Eleazar Wheelock, because you "went into the wilderness to teach" ... and we are grateful for your contribution . but we have more than "wildernesses" and Dartmouth in common, sir. We also have a long way to go and "promises to keep, promises to keep....
