Happy New Year!
The Class joyfully begins 1971 by congratulating Dartmouth's Lambert Trophy winners, our entire football squad, Bob Blackman and every man on the coaching staff. '22 also again salutes Killy Kilmarx for his important part 15 years ago in getting Bob to come to Dartmouth.
'22 has its share in Dartmouth's 89 years of football history (741 games, 474 wins, 230 losses and 37 ties). The Princeton game program listed the 1201 men who won their D in football and it included these classmates: Charles E. Canfield, Malcolm D. Clarke, Sumner D. Kilmarx, George V. MacDermott, George T. Moore, Russell G. Putney, Nehemiah O. Siegfried, George W. Streng, Christopher E. Suttmeier, Williford N. Thompson, John W. Thornton, Phillip H. Threshie, and Clifton E. Watson. Their record was 22-8-2 against opponents that included Georgia, Penn State, Syracuse, Tennessee, and Washington —certainly no namby-pambies. Another Twoter fact gleamed from the Princeton program placed Billy Streng and PhilThreshie among the 26 men who in the 89-year record won four D's in football. Remember '22 had no freshman football in 1918 when the S.A.T.C. team represented the College.
In more recent years, Robert D. Kilmarx '50, "like his daddy used to do," was football manager in 1949. Thomas E. Booth '54, son of Bob and Lois, won his D at tackle in 1953. Robert M. Rex '57, son of Bill and Jean, was captain of the 1956 team. And now Bob Blackman awaits some '22 grandsons who have brawn and grit as well as brains.
Space limitations preclude listing every Twoter who enjoyed every game, but the Yale game was such a gala event it would seem amiss to omit Harry and Peg Bruckner, Bob and Grace Clark, Johnny Johnson and grandson, Steve and Vi Kenyon with daughter Adele and her Yale '62 husband, Killy Kilmarx (and we all hope Elizabeth has recovered rapidly), Fran and Lucy Leland, Ed and Kay McNamara, Ike and Harriott Miller, Len and Margaret Morrissey with son John '50 and grandson Robert, Ted and Beth Robie, Markey Pullen, Spenny and Marge Smith, Jack and Sylvia Taylor. A grand day every way.
Hal and Ruth Clark and Russ Putney were in Hanover the Columbia weekend which was also the occasion for the annual meeting of the Alumni Club Officers who do so much for the College in their respective localities. Hal is secretary of the Pioneer Valley Dartmouth Club, Holyoke-Northampton, and Russ is secretary of the Cheshire County Dartmouth Alumni Association, Keene, N. H. Other familiar names in these appreciated club activities are Wally Mountcastle, president and secretary of the Dartmouth Club of the Gold Coast, Fort Lauderdale, and Charles E. Tayntor '54, son of Hal and Elizabeth, secretary of the Dartmouth Club of Central Connecticuty, New Britain.
Bill Bullen, we are happy to report as of December 1, is very well along the road to full recovery and soon expects to return to his office where he gives so much time and devotion to Dartmouth.
Gene and Nettie Hotchkiss were naturally involved and present, of course, on October 24 to see Gene III inaugurated as president of Lake Forest College. Another Wah-Hoo-Wah for the Hotchkiss clan.
Edwin H. Johnson and Mrs. Kathleen Faulkner McVay were married last August and the Class delights in sending them its most cordial wishes.
Bruce and Helen Cunningham receive the sincere hopes of '22 for cessation of a series of misfortunes including Helen's recently reported illness. The Class misses them.
One of many joys in Hanover is seeing and frequently getting together with classmates who return from time to time. Trustee Jack Dodd and Fran are here frequently as are Carter and Allie Hoyt. And recently, Tony and Eleanor Hanlon,Hsrvey and Cay Moses, Roy and Dot Bail, Jack and Sylvia Taylor, and Larry and Jean Robinson who were reported to have spent the summer here.
Ulysse and Ide Auger, looking hale and happy, appeared in color photography in the September issue of Yankee Magazine. The Augers were showing a minister from Uganda the site of the Thorau cabin at Walden.
Butch Grambs, our Bismark, N.D., classmate, is joined by '22 in sympathy on the loss of his brother Paul.
Herm Oliver, on request, sent in the names of our '22 delegation from Buffalo back in those "present arms" days. All classmates will recall that most likely sextet: Herm, Kerry Bull, Earl Fredericks, Ozzie Holland, Dr. Dave Rivo, and Ozzie Siegfried.
Now please color these dates green on your new 1971 calendar: April 16-17, '22's Little Reunion; October 8-9, '22's Penn Game Weekend; October 29-30, '22's Yale Game Weekend. More, much more later.
