The Ted and Helen Geisel Third Century Professorship in the Humanities has been created by the Board of Trustees, according to announcement made by President Kemeny during the summer. These professorships have been established with funds contributed to the College's Third Century Fund. Ted and his late wife, Helen, who collaborated with him in the production of books, assigned royalties from them to the College.
As announced in the May issue of this magazine another one of these Third Century Professorships has been made possible by a bequest of $750,000 by the late Pete Kelsey, who died last February. The bequest was part of a trust fund set up during his lifetime. The first holder of this professorship will be Fred Berthold Jr., Professor of Religion at the College. A 1944 graduate of Dartmouth, he joined the faculty in 1949 and from 1957 to 1962 was the first dean of the William Jewett Tucker Foundation.
The Third Century Professorships were created to encourage teaching innovation as distinct from subject research and each of them provides, in addition to compensation, initiative funds in the amount of $10,000 annually to underwrite experiments in teaching.
Larry Bankart writes some interesting Dartmouth news about his children: "Our son Peter, who graduated from Dartmouth in '67, received his Ph.D. in Psychology at Dartmouth. His wife Brenda also received her Ph.D. from Dartmouth. They made Louise and me grandparents in February. Peter joins Thad Seymour's faculty at Wabash College in August. After a dozen Bankarts graduated from Dartmouth (first one in 1906) our youngest son Alan breaks with tradition and will be going to Princeton this fall. To turn down Dartmouth acceptance was a very hard decision. Alan was a member of the Belmont Hill Ist boat Varsity 4 which not only had a victorious season but also won the New England Interscholastic crew championship and then went on to win the gold medal in the American-Canadian championships at St. Catherine's, Ontario."
Jane Sheehy, daughter of the late JackDavis, is attending law school now that her family is grown up.
Drew Cheney, grandson of Dot andLarry Leavitt, will be a member of the Class of 1975. He will be graduating at the time of our 50th reunion. Is he the first grandson of 1925 to enter the College? Dot and Larry celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary on June 12, assisted by the Tanzers, Wheldens and McKennans.
Ben, son of Bucky and Molly Bates, graduated June 13. Are there any other sons of classmates who are prospective graduates?
Rad Tanzer rates congratulations on his election as president of the American Association of Plastic Surgeons.
A happy announcement from the summer mail: "The children of Mrs. Chesser Milburn Campbell and Mr. William Halsted Taft announce the marriage of their parents Saturday, the 26th of June 1971 in The Little Chapel, Winnetka Congregational Church." Hawley writes that he and Hollie (yes, that's her real name) plan to spend spring and fall in her Wilmette apartment on Lake Michigan, summers in his new home in Linville, N. C., and the first quarter of the year at the Hillsboro Club in Pompano Beach, Fla., where they met a couple of years ago. Each has a married son and a married daughter and the total of grandchildren is nine.
Some of our classmates are fighting difficult illnesses and their courage and good cheer set fine examples. DeakBlodgrett says, "I am still getting around in low gear, but I am getting around, and the situation is better than last year." EddiePease, who had a throat problem says "the biopsy proved negative, thank goodness. Now I've got to stop talking, stop smoking and take penicillin tablets for ten days to help cure an infection in my larynx." DickHolden had a hospital confinement last spring as the result of a bad bleeding ulcer but at last report was home and on the mend.
