In writing to Whitey about the possibility of joining a '25 windjammer cruise along the coast of Maine, Walt VomLehn says, "It is over 50 years ago that I was aboard a schooner. Came around Hatteras in a blow aboard a four-master, the Ampero - mizzen mast down and leaking badly. The mast snapped off when she ran aground on the North-South Carolina boundary. Bound from Havana to Baltimore, cargo of kerosene and molasses in wooden barrels, most of which had to be jettisoned in order to refloat her." In spite of this Walt was interested in our prospective cruise, which unfortunately had to be called off.
Dot and Larry Leavitt spent a month in an apartment on Marco Island, Fla., a spot where Ellie and Frank Wallis have been spending most of each winter in recent years.
Marian and Bunny Levison have an apartment in a high riser on Marco Beach and the Leavitts report a very pleasant luncheon with them.
They also visited Catherine and Bob Weinig at their home in Naples and had a demonstration of Bob's sophisticated ham radio installation.
Phil O'Connell this winter was also in Florida instead of New Jersey, which is home the rest of the year. He had three months of golf and this extensive practice keeps his game sharp. He reports a couple of 78's at Mountain Lake and a 75 at the Belleville Biltmore.
