I'm disturbed by a questionnaire on coeducation I received from the College which was distributed to all alumni officers. I'm not sure how it will be used, but if it is envisioned as some sort of poll of alumni opinion, then it is hardly valid, and imposes a role which I have never intended (nor pretended, I hope) to assume. The idea that any of our class "officers" have any sort of democratic mandate is a patent farce. In fact I for one was roped into this with no clear conception of what was involved, and certainly with no overwhelming sense of public service. Nevertheless, it now occurs to me, particularly in view of this questionnaire, that the opportunities for passive disservice are abundant. (All of which ignores for the moment that this "administration" hasn't done squat.) Anyway, if anybody gets irritated at me, I hope it's for what I've said rather than for what I've avoided. (If this bores you, go immediately to boldface and turn on.)
One question on this thing captures the whole dilemma. I was asked to agree, disagree, or express no opinion that coeducation would result in an "unhealthy increase" in sexual relations for undergraduates. I'm in effect asked to judge the quality (relative to quantity!) not only of my sexual experiences at Dartmouth, but of all yours as well, and frankly I just didn't get around that much. At any rate, I answered "disagree," feeling that "unhealthy" was the most pressing attitude requiring objection, but that in no way satisfies my conviction that "increase" is just as crucial, and desirable. At least I always felt there was room for more, and it is twice as easy when accessibility is half the battle. (That's a perfect Dartmouth- turned-Stanford perspective. You see what I mean about unhealthy!)
The point is, this is my opinion, and it may turn up somewhere as yours in all its ambiguity. Reassuring, isn't it?
What news I have at the moment (I'm in Denver and don't have much) is contained in two letters. The first is from ThorneButler, in which among other things he comments, "... Oct. 10 weekend ... was virtually a Class of '70 4th month reunion. Mlakar Kenworthy and Winsatt held forth as the afternoon's entertainment at Memorial Field." (A damned clever way to Make the Column, you guys—that's your five-year quota, ha, ha.) Thorne and his wife Mary are both teaching at Green Vale School on Long Island. He's playing for the Manhattan Rugby Club in New York and mentions that Lynn Breedlove was in town with the Harvard Business School club'; also expects to see Dick Ostberg, playing with the Boston Mystics, sometime in the spring.
Dave Irwin wrote me earlier this month, reporting the marriage of John Ludlow to the former Miss Merrily Kolstad (U. of Minnesota '70), September 12 in Minneapolis. Other classmates in attendance were Bill Flaherty, second best man, and ReedSaunders, usher along with Irv. "Reed went on to Jackson Hole, Wyo., to be Le Ski Bum," says Irv. "He spent all fall driving a cement truck ... our class is already moving up the corporate ladder! And as I remember it Reed took Truck Driving 47 pass-fail.
"Bill, John and his wife, and I are all back in Hanover now, at Tuck (second year, thank God!)." Dave signed the letter "your right wing," which prompts me to wonder where the left wing is ... This is after all the People's Posting Place. Feel free to exercise your political bias. I do ... OFF THE PRIG!
Ran into Mike Brown and John Sadd at the Dartmouth Christmas party here in Denver. Don't really have any idea what they're doing, but it seems to me we played some neat card games at Don Flipse's ('69) afterwards. Will one of you please write and tell me who won. (Actually, I think Brownie's in Bloomington, Ind., coaching diving at the University among other things. John was going to Pittsburgh. Why?)
Loren Lortscher '69 and I stopped by Yogi Glasser's ('69) place at Vail last week and had a beer with Sparky Millikan and Peter Bryant. They live in Telluride, Colo., at the moment, Sparky working in a (the) hotel. Their temporary accommodations at Vail were from all appearances ... enviable.
Well, it's New Year's Eve, so I've got to go toot my horn.
