Alumni Giving Adds $13 Million in Year
FEBRUARY 1971

The fiscal year which ended June 30, 1970 was another successive record year for contributions credited to Dartmouth classes with living members. During the year $13,392,619 in gifts was received, bringing the cumulative total of contributions so credited to almost $100 million.

As might be expected, payments on pledges to the Third Century Fund led the way, and realizations from bequests and another $2-million-plus performance by the Alumni Fund helped set the new record.

Leading all classes in contributions during the year was 1926 with $1.9 million, followed by 1920 with just over $1 million. This enabled 1926 to vault from 6th to 2nd place and 1920 from Bth to sth among all classes, but 1915 remained securely in first place with its total of more than $8 million.

Behind 1915 come the classes of 1926, 1914, and 1930, which become the first classes except for '15 to surpass the $4-million mark. 1920 and 1925 both joined the select group of classes over $3 million, and 1903, 1921, 1927 and 1931 were the new classes over $2 million. Four classes, 1917, 1932, 1937 and 1950, joined the ranks of classes with totals of over $1 million.

As expected during a major capital campaign, there were many other changes in the class rankings and these changes will continue to take place in this and future years as major commitments to the Third Century Fund are fulfilled.

Top class in Alumni Fund giving was 1930 with $62,395, followed by 1935 with $59,468. Four other classes, 1926, 1931, 1929 and 1925, all surpassed $50,000. 1925 remained in first place among all classes in all-time Alumni Fund giving with $955,868. This means that 1925 will have the honor of being the first class to reach the $1-million level of total Alumni Fund giving sometime during the 1971 campaign.

1971 marks a new major program of giving under which all classes holding official reunions are being asked to make an extra effort to increase significantly their Alumni Fund performance in the reunion year. This new Reunion Giving Program is an extension of the 25-Year Giving Program which has been conducted for some years and it is hoped that the new emphasis will provide the necessary thrust to lift the Alumni Fund to $2.5 million this year.
