Dartmouth's skiers, initially thinned by the loss of top performers to international competition (Chuck Bent and Sheldon Perry plus jumper Scott Berry), had more problems through the season as versatile Tom Kendall (a sharp Alpine racer and strong jumper) suffered a broken leg midway through the Carnival action after another top Nordic standout, Jason Densmore, injured his shoulder on the eve of the Dartmouth Carnival and missed all of the fun.
Nevertheless, Coach Al Merrill's Indians came on well, avenging the loss to Middlebury in the Dartmouth Carnival by trimming the Panthers in the Williams Carnival.
The Eastern championship meet was at Middlebury and the host was back in form. Middlebury, with strong jumping, set the stage for a similar performance in the NCAA championships, by overtaking Dartmouth in the final event to snap the Green hold on the Eastern crown.
The NCAA meet, at Terry Peak in South Dakota's Black Hills National Forest, again belonged to Denver but Dartmouth couldn't muster the strength to claim the runnerup slot. Denver dominated the meet, more than 20 points ahead of Colorado. Middlebury snatched third place by a half-point over Dartmouth which saw Co-Captain Teyck Weed set the pace with a third place finish in the Nordic combined standings.
In track, the weightmen again dominated the action for the Indians. Co-Captain Bill Dinneen, the 1970 winner, had to settle for a second place in the weight throw at the Heptagonals and held the same spot in the IC4A meet.
Wayne Moody, who came on well through the season in the shot put, took third place in the shot at the Heps but still hasn't found the range of his brother Ted who set the Dartmouth record of 57-3 last year.
One of the biggest surprises of the indoor season, which saw the Indians compile a 5-3 dual meet record, was junior high jumper Tom Byron, who sailed to a 6-8 effort at Brown in dual action and then took second place in the Heps. Byron's jump at Brown equalled the Dartmouth indoor record held by Chet Halka since 1967.
In squash, John Kenfield's team finished with a 6-6 record and was ranked ninth in the final intercollegiate standings. Led by Captain Justin Stanley and Jim Smith, both All-Ivy selections, the Indians posted a 1-4 Ivy League record. Dave Miskell and sophomore Doug Donahue were also solid performers for the Indians.
Dartmouth's wrestlers came up with a 2-7-2 record in dual action and got a great performance from sophomore Steve Morelli from Tulsa, Okla., in the NCAA District One tourney. Morelli had an overall 9-2 record, was 8-1 in 150-pound action through the the season, and then took the NCAA district title at that weight. He had strong support through the season from sophomore Ted Thompson who was undefeated at the 177-pound level and won the New England title (which he had also won as a freshman). He missed the NCAA meet due to exams.
