The office of Alumni Records has received word from the widow that JamesB. Tompkins died of cancer on December 31, 1969 in his home town of Toronto, Canada. Jim, sometimes known as "Sparrow," had fought the disease for five years and had never given up hope. After over five years in the service Jim came to Toronto and set up his own accounting firm. He married Patricia Ann Spore in 1946 and they had three children all of whom live at home with their mother. After Jim sold his accounting firm he practiced in Toronto as a private accountant and business consultant. I had only a nodding acquaintance with Jim at Dartmouth but our paths crossed in later years. Prior to World War II we were both employed at rather lowly jobs for a communications giant in New York and soon thereafter we were privates together in a National Guard cavalry unit. Jim came to Dartmouth from New York City where he attended Riverdale School. He also attended Choate. At Dartmouth Jim was very active in golf. Between Dartmouth and military service Jim graduated from Tuck School.
