In lacrosse, a couple of sophomores have provided the noise in the early going as Dartmouth gave Coach Dudley Hendrick his first collegiate victory (a 10-8 decision at Morgan State during the southern trip) and showed signs of much-improved scoring ability in the first five games.

"Mitch Whiteley has been great in the goal," said Hendrick of the soph from Towson, Md., "and Scott Anderson (Ithaca, N.Y.) has added much to our attack."

Whiteley showed his mettle on the southern trip as the Indians topped Drexel in a scrimmage and bowed to powerful Navy (another scrimmage). He had his hands full (and wasn't alone) as nationally ranked Washington & Lee took a 13-3 win and also had his troubles in an 8-2 loss at Baltimore University.

"Still, he's learning and he's aggressive and tough," said Hendrick of Whiteley. "He's had some good help on defense, particularly from Kevin O'Shea."

As the regular season opened, however, it was apparent that the Indians still have a way to go in returning to Ivy League title contention. In the Ivy opener, Whiteley was the bright spot in a 5-2 loss at Yale.

A week later, in their first outing on a synthetic surface at Penn's Franklin Field, the Indians faltered, 10-2.
