If every one of Dartmouth's hockey games had gone the way of the Green's spectacular 5-3 victory over St. Lawrence at Davis Rink on February 12, the Indians would stand at 12-5-2 instead of the 5-12-2 they bring into the last ten days of the season.
The victory over the ECAC Tournament-minded Larries was clear cut. Spotting the New York foe a goal, the Indians dominated play thereafter, scoring five times before the Larries connected twice, including the finale with two seconds on the clock.
Dartmouth's sophomore line of center Ken Davidson and wings Dave Hill and Jeff Kosak will be a combination to reckon with in the future. Hill leads the Dartmouth scoring, with Kosak and Davidson just a step behind. Davidson, at this writing, has notched either a goal or an assist in Dartmouth's last 15 games. They each had a piece of the scoring action against St. Lawrence along with senior defenseman Joe Fahey, who is closing in on the scoring record for a Dartmouth defenseman (27 by Dan Goggin in 1956-57). Fahey has 21 points with four games to go.
Just as in basketball, Dartmouth's hockey games have been either very close or beyond reach. Only against St. Lawrence, which ranks as the Indians' best win over a non-Ivy League, Division I rival in ten years, did Dartmouth hold a clear-cut edge.
The other victory of note was the 3-2 verdict over Princeton as Kosak along with defensemen Mike Barle and Gary Goodenough scored early and then held off the Tigers' power play in the third period.
It was another third-period power play that provided Yale with the winning goal in a 4-3 decision that marred the Carnival atmosphere. Three times the Green came back to tie the game but the Elis managed to avenge Dartmouth's 4-3 win at New Haven in January.
Three of the remaining four games are with Penn (an 8-2 victim in Hanover), Princeton, and Brown (which trimmed the Green, 11-3, at Providence after a 5-5 tie in the ECAC Holiday Tournament). The Ivy League's first division remains within reach as the Indians challenge Yale and Princeton for fourth place.
