Cited as Class Treasurer of the Year at the annual meeting of class officers in Hanover on May 1 was James HoweColton '1. The citation accompanying the award read:
Five years ago you took over the job of Class Treasurer for 1916, and as might be expected of a former methods engineer, you quickly settled into effective ways to fulfill your responsibilitees for the Class. As a result of your financial stewardship during that five-year-period, 1916 today is decidedly solvent, with money in the bank and other funds invested.
You have not been reluctant to set class dues at a realistic level, and three increases have brought 1916 up to $9.00 this year. Especially notable is the fact that the percentage of dues payers has climbed along with the amount of the dues, and your record this year of 92% of graduates and 57% of non-graduates for an overall mark of 85% of the Class stands out among the results reported by all class treasurers. All but a small number of your classmates are covered by 1916's group subscription to the Dartmouth Alumni Magazine, and 55 other members of the 1916 family are also on your subscription list.
Your financial expertise was enlisted by Dartmouth in the Third Century Fund campaign. In your home town you have been senior warden and treasurer of the Episcopal Church and the Red Cross had had the benefit of your service as chairman for fifteen years. These College and community contributions are a praiseworthy supplement to your accomplishment for the Class of 1916, in recognition of which we salute you as Dartmouth Class Treasurer of the Year.
