Newsletter Editor of the Year
JUNE 1971

John Barker Stearns '16 was honored as Class Newsletter Editor of the Year when class officers met in Hanover on May 1 Accompanying the award was the following citation:

For more than forty years you apprenticed as a scholar and pedagogue of the Greek and Latin classics, a writer for The ClassicalWeekly and Classical Philology and as an associate editor of The Classical Journal before being elevated to the position of editor of 1916's Newsletter—The Balmacaan Athletic Club Journal.

As chronicler for the 1916 wearers of the Scotsman's classic protection from Scotch Mist, your classic reporting has encouraged classmates to contribute items about oxyrhynchus papyri and the Younger Pliny's account of Vesuvius' bad behavior in 97 A.D. Classmates belonging to the Romantic school write in seeking help from your "Here-in-the-Village" characters on the care and feeding of racoons and duck billed platypi and how to lead a swarm of honey bees from the living room partition without losing a bee or getting stung. Pietro dagli Spozzi certainly would caution "Steady, boy, steady."

Your newsletter is a joy to your classmates and other readers who are much too young to have worn a balmacaan or even know what it is. You have closed the generation gap with your delightful publication and for this reporting we designate you Class Newsletter Editor of the Year with this admonition: ILLEGITIMIS NON CARBORUNDUM.
