OCTOBER 1972 ROBERT C. BANKART, THOMAS D. NAST

The new class directory, as engineered by Bankart & Rotch, Inc., should have reached your hands last June. We have had no reports of non-receipt and only one goof. We had trouble tracking down Bob Sullivan (4 Dane St., Jamaica Plain, Mass. 02130, tel. 617-522-3571; Mass. Commission for the Blind, 39 Boylston St., Boston, 617-727-5565) and, when we did connect, I failed to make the entry. Bob has worked for the Commission for a number of years and by unhappy coincidence has lost the sight of One eye and the other is failing. He formerly traveled about the state but has now been promoted to a desk job and interviewing.

Several classmates have commented that they used the directory this past summer while traveling. We have extra copies, so if any get lost or you desire another, please drop your secretary a line.

The success and final figures of the 1972 Alumni Fund can probably be noted elsewhere but our class figures ($54,088 raised against a $50,000 goal from 361 contributors from a possible 509 (70.9%) ) strikes us as a remarkable feat. Chuck Bassett, that bulldog in sheep's clothing, rode herd on his assistant agents never indicating in any way that our goal could not be met, even toward the end when it appeared impossible. All the credit goes to Chuck and his team but, don't forget, without a good sales manager you'll find most of the salesmen out playing golf! Last year, as a result of the success of our Reunion Gift Program with Chuck and Fran Fenn, Fran was made head of the College committee to oversee this program as a continuing affair. This year's statistics were again very impressive.

We regret to say Dr. Bill Russell died of a heart attack April 26. Details will be found in the obituary section.

Our summer was enjoyable to a point. Three points to be exact. Katie (with trifocals) missed the first step on our porch to make a three-point landing on the front lawn, breaking her right ankle, spraining her left, and injuring her shoulder painfully, plus smashing two potted plants she was carrying. At this writing she has been in two casts for a month with at least another to go. She now wears a walking cast and is on crutches. Perhaps by fall reunion she'll be back to normal — whatever that is.

We also attended a meeting called by Fran Fenn and attended by Patty and BillRotch and Russ Stearns (Lee had rushed to Florida due to her father's heart attack — reported getting along OK) to discuss fall reunion. We learn that Johnand Jean Milne will host the Saturday evening catered class buffet at their home. The Stearns have sold their home in Hanover and bought a lovely old remodeled place with five acres in Plainfield, N. H., some 20 miles south along the Connecticut river. We're fortunate to have the Milnes take over from the Stearns, as last fall's buffet was a delightful affair. Russ is not retiring yet, but he will have a longer commute from the country.

Bill Rotch said he had a visit from BobWoodruff who is interested in buying a small town newspaper somewhere in New England. Bob is connected with the Wool Bureau, a division of the International Wool Secretariat, a New York organization which promotes wool. Bill Rotch also has the honor of being Chairman of the Class of 1937 Committee for the re-election of Senator Tom McIntyre to the U. S. Senate. Committee treasurer is Win Taft.

Arne Lanner has surfaced by way of a press release from Hallmark Cards. He has been named director of customer financial services and now oversees the company's credit and financial relationships and thousands of accounts. He started with Hallmark in 1946 and, until his new position, was president of Henry Fayette, Inc. His home address is 8405 Reinhardt Lane, Leawood, Kansas. This is the first news of Arne in a long time, and we're glad to pass it along.

Another classmate in a new job is BobWeeks who is now president of Textron's Shuron Continental, makers of eyeglass frames, lenses, and optical machinery. He has been with that division for 11 years and before that was the controller of a division of Riegel Paper Company. Another Weeks occupation in recent years has been sending sons to Dartmouth, namely Richard '6B and Philip '71.

Providing this Magazine comes out on time, we wish to remind any and all within traveling distance that our fall reunion is the weekend of October 13-14, Princeton football game. The 25 rooms at Howard Johnson's are all booked but there could be a cancellation; drop us a line if you are interested. We again have room 41 at the Inn Motor Lodge reserved as headquarters where we will meet Friday afternoon, and before and after Saturday's game. If you're in town please drop in; you can lock up your personal belongings there during the game. Friday evening we have a class dinner with a Hanover speaker.
