All of you received the special supplement of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE entitled, "Surveys of Dartmouth Opinion" last month and I'm sure you will agree that it made for some interesting reading. Of particular note was the survey among the students conducted last May. While their attitudes toward contemporary society in general, and campus and national issues in particular, have changed from what was true ten years ago, their feelings toward Dartmouth have not. Students are still complaining about D.D.A. food and the social life available in Hanover. So what else is new? The issue creating the most interest among alumni and the student body is coeducation, and there is a clear difference of opinion between the older and younger classes. Please let me know your feelings on this very important subject and perhaps we can establish an exchange of ideas in future columns.

We still have quite a few members of the Class in the armed forces. Capt. Lor en Jacobson, USAF, is working with high strength metals at the Air Force Materials Labs in Ohio. Loren states that he has been unsuccessful in preventing failures before they occur; ie. F-111, and may have to shift his career to political science to handle the required explanations. Jay Emery is a pilot in the Air Force and spent the summer of 1969 on Long Island "beating up boats with my F-101." Jay is still single and had a great summer there. However, all good things must come to an end and we now find Jay flying over the wastelands of the Texas panhandle.

Major Ed Johnson, U.S.M.C., returned from Vietnam earlier this year and is now living in Jacksonville, N. C., with his wife and young son.

Lcdr. Gary Kanady, U.S.N., left Connecticut last spring for Hawaii. Gary is operations officer on the "USS Aspro" which is a nuclear submarine based at Pearl Harbor. He was sorry to miss our 10th reunion by such a close margin, as were we, but Uncle Sam wasn't sympathetic at all. Gary and Mary have a daughter and two sons. More news on other men in the service in the next issue.

John Mitchell has been named an assistant controller by the Sybron Corporation of Rochester, N. Y., which he joined in 1968 as a planning analyst. He previously was with Univac in Philadelphia for three years, and before that served three years as a senior accountant in the New York City office of Ernst & Ernst, public accountants. John has an MBA degree from Tuck School. He is a director of the Citizens Tax League of Pittsford, N. Y., where he lives at 49 Round Trail Drive with his wife Melinda and their two sons.

In my job as new products manager for Bristol-Myers, I have the opportunity to travel a great deal. Besides being broadening, especially around the waist, it gives me a chance to speak with classmates who live great distances from the East and who cannot easily get back for reunions, football games, etc. For example, in Denver I spoke with both Jon Halverson and Bruce Backer. Jon told me that he was leaving the law firm of Davis, Graham & Stubbs for a legal staff position with the World Bank in Washington. You might say he will be a member of McNamara's band. Jon, Anne and the two boys should be settled by mid-October. Bruce, on the other hand, plans to stay in the mile high city. He spends a great deal of his spare time hiking, skiing, and just enjoying the great outdoors. Those of you who have traveled through Colorado can easily understand why Bruce has become a "chubber." At any rate, Bruce will be coming East this month to interview prospective young lawyers from the Yale Law School, and hopes to make it to wherever Dartmouth plays that Saturday.

Another lawyer who is also planning to interview for his firm at Yale Law School this fall is Joe Mandel. I spoke with Joe when I was in Los Angeles, and found him very anxious to return for a football game. In fact, the only things he misses out there are Dartmouth football and the chance to see his old friends. So give Joe a call at 788- 7485 the next time you're in L. A.

From there, I went on to San Francisco where Dick Gale was kind enough to fill me in on what has been happening in that great town. Dick and his wife, Luisiana, were packing to leave the next day for Italy and a month's vacation with the in-laws. When he isn't traveling around the world, Dick can be found at the Dean Witter Co. where he is a registered representative.

There are quite a few '60's in the town that Tony Bennett made famous. TomHarmon is practicing law and is president of the Dartmouth Club of Northern California and Nevada. Tom is still single as is JonRichardson, who at last word was planning to open a restaurant somewhere in the city. We'll make known the name and address of this new establishment as soon as it's available. Bob Bentel was elected a vp of the Bank of California. Nice going, Bob. Walt Sosnowski is dabbling in real estate and both Rogr Hackley and Bill Modahl are lawyers in town. The Gales and Modahls do a lot of camping, hiking, and skiing together up in the mountains and sometimes get as far as Lake Tahoe. They make great use of back packs on these trips, which only goes to show that the college student of today doesn't have a monopoly on this particular mode of travel.

I was very happy to have had the chance to speak with Dick Preininger on that same trip. Dick is working in orthopedics at Stanford and is living in Menlo Park. The Preiningers moved from Baltimore in June and thus were unable to attend our reunion. Dick and his wife, Carolyn, are looking forward to trying the skiing in the West after many years on the Vermont slopes.

A couple of weddings to report. TomStrong exchanged vows with Miss Marjorie Ann Cohen back on June 26. The ceremony took place in New Haven, where the bride hails from and where Tom runs his own graphic design firm. Marjorie is also creatively inclined as she has been a designer for the past four years.

One day later, Dwight Beebe and Miss Janis Mae Fuller were married in Ashtabula, Ohio. Dwight is currently the director of Data Processing at Carlisle-Allen Co. and a member of the Board of Trustees. While Dwight processes data, Janis teaches school in nearby Geneva.
