It may be a long, long time from May to December but the elapse of time from May to September seems exceedingly brief. All summer I wallowed in the luxury of no deadlines to meet as if my brief respite was eternal. Alas! Curtains! To my classly duties I must repair.

After torrential rains in June the summer in the East was quite acceptable. I even had the good fortune to be able to join the American Bar Association in San Francisco in August where Quent "The Q" Kopp and I had lunch in a Japanese restaurant (No! He has not deserted his Chinese constituents) before heading for City Hall at the Q's insistence. At said seat of government on the Bay we crashed into a press conference with Sargent Shriver where Quent got in some political bon mots gratis. Although the newspapers talk of maximum security my entrance went unquestioned and no identification was demanded. Don't believe everything you read except in this column. Watch out for Quent! My guess is he won't stop at Supervisor for a large city.

Ed Graham, another earlier Gold Pick-Ax winner, is back in New York from Los Angeles via Chicago. At last contact Ed was associated with Ogilvy and Mather, Inc., an advertising firm. Ed promises me a long, newsy letter when he has something shocking or bizarre to report.

At one point in time the Class of '49 held monopolistic control of the Dartmouth Club of Karachi, West Pakistan. We've sunk from riches to rags. First, Brayton(Chink) Meyer left there for a new assignment with Esso in Singapore but apparently threw in the sponge and moved to Buffalo, N. Y. — present activities a deep, dark secret that my correspondence cannot seem to probe. Then, anchorman Dave Raynolds was reassigned to Washington, D. C., where he currently resides at 3713 Harrison Street, N.W., Washington, D. C. 20015. Dave will be attending a one-year program at the National War College at Fort McNair and after that he will, without doubt, garner some exotic assignment to some romantic place. His return voyage home sounds equally envy-generating — via Kathmandu (that's a new one), Japan, Alaska, and Wyoming. To keep wanderlust in the family Dave sent son, Robert (Dartmouth '73) to Kenya this summer to aquatize with the hippos (not "hippies") in Lake Rudolph.

The June 9, 1972 issue of the Manchester (N H) Union carried quite an account of the recent activities of Alexander (Zandy) Taft. An ex-politico of many years' experience in the New Hampshire House of Representatives, Zandy is now a benevolent bureaucrat and occupies the post of Director of Comprehensive Planning. His activities appear to be intensely concerned with the preservation of the beauty of northern New Hampshire which may be threatened by unplanned development assisted by the State's new interstate highway system. Now that there's a single planning region for the northern part of the state Zandy's dreams may reach fruition.

Robert (Rocket) Reed finally peeled off the cast and sling and brought us up to date on his move from Tulsa, Oklahoma to San Antonio, Texas. As of May 1, 1972 Rocket left Cities Service Oil Co. to take the awesome title and job of Group Vice-President, Refining, Marketing and Transportation for Tesoro Petroleum Corp. He writes that San Antone is not only pleasant but quite atmospheric and has the added attraction of being close enough to Mexico to enjoy the raptures of Tequila and Toros. For the salty brine he can partake of the beauties of the Gulf of Mexico only two and one-half hours away. Although he is still bumpable on the company aircraft he insures (editor's poetic license) that he will join us at the 25th reunion. Rocket sees Jim Huntington from time to time when in Fun City and keeps abreast of the Class that way.

Dan Ryder has also bitten the bullet and moved back to the North Country, although his trek was shorter than some. The sport of skiing several winters in Waterville Valley awoke him to the business opportunities available, causing him to pack his family up in Bedford, Mass., and follow the North Star to Campton, N. H., where he smiles smugly behind a shingle inscribed "Mad River Realty and Insurance." Dan reports that son Jim finishes M.I.T. this year and hopes to attend Dartmouth Medical School; son David is starting his last year at Holderness School where he skis varsity and cecaptains the tennis team; wife Grace is in the construction business, planning a new home which is probably in progress as of this writing.

Friend Ralph Burgard is back in the limelight. This past spring the Board of Trustees of the College established a 15-man Board of Overseers for the Hopkins Center, composed of "distinguished men and women from the worlds of art, music, theater, business, law and education." Ralph, currently residing in Riverdale, N. Y., was tapped for this great honor based upon his experience as the first Director of the Associated Councils of the Arts from 1965-1970. Currently our talented classmate enjoys the pleasures and rewards of being an independent consultant. This new Board of Overseers will review policies, programs and resources of the Hopkins Center, recommend changes and actively support its activities. Perhaps this affiliation will bring Ralph back to Hanover for one of our fall get-togethers.

Short notes: Congressman Dick Mallary has been busy with grass roots contact with his Vermont constituents; Dr. Nate Gottschalk has been cited as the "driving force behind the enormous improvement of the University-Community Symphony Orches- tra" at Albany State University; incapacitated by broken arms Christian (Bill)Miller and Bob MacLaren now reside at 703 Sanchez, Santurce, Puerto Rico and 4505 Henican, New Orleans, La., respectively. Some go north; some go south; who's left in the middle? Gunther Perdue?

Shortly after you finish reading this your Class Executive Committee and, hopefully, many other '49ers will be convening in Hangover for our annual meeting and the Princeton game on October 14. Not so fat Albert (Bud) Hughes who will be launching his reunion plans for our 25th. Hope to see many of you there for the planning session.
